Multiple problems with AOL VISA Rewards points program.

09/05/2006
I have had a very similar experience to MJ's posting in May 2006. AOL has been extremely slow at applying redeemend points, and since July, twice they rejected my points, until after the program ended, so the points were rendered useless. Neither the Chase reps nor AOL reps can provide any answers. I smell a rat, and hope this might end up a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST AOL.

Signed up for AOL Visa card to get free service. Points taking up to 3 months to be credited to my acount. Changed to High Speed and was promised and told by rep that my points would still be credited for the High Speed service. This was a lie. Over 1900 points were lost.

Have points but can't redeem

07/21/2006
I no longer use aol as my internet provider, but have points that are going to expire since the program is ending for the aol rewards program. I wanted to use the points for a friend who has an aol account but this can't be done according to customer service. I will probably be cancelling this account and using Discover since their rewards program is very easy and straight forward.

Discontinuing Reward Points for AOL Service

06/27/2006
With my May 2006 statement, I received a notice that the AOL Rewards point program was going to be discontinued, and all points needed to be redeemed immediately. That day, I called and redeemed my points for my AOL service, $75.00 worth. The next statement I received (June), the amount had NOT been credited, and I was still being charged $14.95 for my AOL service. I called Chase customer service, and they explained (VERY politely & courteously , I'll give them that), that I would not see them be redeemed until July. With the program being closed effective August 28th, and any points NOT used after that date, DISAPPEARING -- that means I will have lost $60.00 of my hard-earned points. With only 2 months notice, before they take away all points, how are people supposed to use them up when it can only be used on AOL service fees? That is just CRAP. I will be cancelling my card when this fiasco is over with. If and WHEN I ever see the points redeemed on my bill that is, which I doubt will happen.

Leaving this card, too

03/21/2006
I got this card many years ago at 12.5 % ... they quietly raised the interest rate on me to 15.9 percent ... That's upsetting in and of itself. Then, when I tried to redeem my 48,800 reward credits, they blocked it in bureaucratic mumbo jumbo that they can't figure out ... so, why do I have rewrad credits that I can't redeem for anything? Which means, why am I keeping this card? Ray Chicago

Watch that interest rate!!

08/08/2004
I've had this card for several years, enticed by the free AOL. At first, it was great - high credit limit and I did indeed get several months of AOL for free. But when I switched to broadband, I couldn't redeem my points. Then, about 4-5 months ago, my balance approached but never exceeded the max. (I had used it for tuition at school.) I got a small, black and white flyer that looked much like the tons of junk mail I get. I did take a glance at it and realized what it was. Then I read it in more detail. It informed me that my rates were going to be increased to about 17% from 9.9%. Since I have NEVER been late and NEVER exceeded my limit, I called Customer Service to ask why. The person was very rude, with an attitude like, "how dare you even ask?!" She told me they didn't like my debt-to equity ratio (even though I own my own home, have over $100K of equity in my house, have savings, and a mid-700s credit score). I explained that my D-to-E had actually IMPROVED over the past couple of years, as I had paid off several cards, closed the accounts, bought a house, and had money in the bank. She haughtily informed me that they can raise my rates anytime they choose for whatever reason they choose. I hung up and wrote Bank One. I outlined in detail what I had told the CU rep, and I was told essentially, "well, maybe you did, run a more recent credit report for us". (I question how recent their report was if they wanted ME to run it FOR THEM.) I wrote back and said that I could not accept their new interest rate terms. I paid off a large balance in 3 months and closed my account. The moral of the story is...just about any credit card CAN jack your rates with minimal, quiet (junk mail-type flyer) notice and they WILL if they can get away with it. READ EVERYTHING they send you, even if it looks like a marketing thing. Stand up for yourself IN WRITING using CERTIFIED MAIL, return receipt. WATCH YOUR INTEREST RATE CAREFULLY! Don't let them rip you off!

Rip Off

06/19/2004
I only signed up to get the rewards points which would translate to free months' of AOL. Now that we have switched to broadband, there is no program for this. Now they take 2400 points to cover a $14.95 charge. I'll use up my points and find another card. The entire process has been time consuming and complicated, as the service reps at the card have absolutely no idea what to do with this situation.

AOL Visa card is really great!

04/07/2004
I could not believe some of the comments that I read about this card in other reviews. This card is great, and I recommend it to all of my friends who use AOL. Thanks to this card, I have had unlimited usage of AOL for my whole family for 5 years, and never paid a dime, except one time when I forgot to redeem minutes. I easily get $40-50 a MONTH worth of benefit from this card. I don't keep a balance on any credit card, so I can't comment on the interest rate. The only negative is that the phone method of redemption takes so long. It would be great if they had an Internet way to redeem.
Most Attractive Feature: I have NEVER paid for AOL service for 5 years thanks to this card!

AOL VISA/REWARD POINTS

03/22/2004
I am currently an AOL Visa cardholder. When I first received the card, the interest rate was reasonably low. Now my interest rate has skyrocketed to 24.99 %. Additionally, I am having difficulty with redeeming the reward points. Each month, AOL continues to bill me $28.90 for AOL internet service. I have called customer service for both AOL and AOL Internet with no success. The two are not communicating with each other. As of today, I am cancelling my account with AOL. I hope that one day, someone will file a lawsuit against AOL and Bank One. It is definetly a scam. The unfortunate thing is that I have fallen victim to it. I would not recommend an AOL Visa to anyone.

aol platinum visa card

03/14/2003
The AOL Platinum Visa Card is a very good card to carry because it is interest free for a full year. After that period of time it goes to approximately eight or nine percent interest which I believe to be low. It gives you from five hundred to a five thousand dollar spending limit. You can transfer balance from high interest cards that you have to this Platinum Visa card to save you alot of money, and get rid of your high interest cards also in doing so make you more credit worthy. I would highly recommend the AOL Platinum Visa Card and I am very happy to have one myself and so should you.

Discover card has to reach above a certain level to receive the 1% benefit. GM cards that earn high interest are only good if you are going to purchase a card in the future, or if they are offering something you need at a discount price. Since I am retired and on a limited income, I need cash as soon as possible. I have AOL as my on-line provider, so all my points can be used for a buy down on my monthly service. Since I pay it off in full twice a month, I have no interest charges, and no annual fee. There is no hidden charges. I saved $80 during the last year on my AOL On-line cost.

AOL Visa-Not worth it

08/09/2002
Misery loves company. It's unfortunate that this card has caused me and others such misery. It's bad enough they have teaser rates, then jack them up on you, customer services treated me just down right rude. I was using my reward points for annual AOL service, then when it came time to renew, they charged me over $200 on the card for the following year's service instead of using my reward points as I did in the previous year. After several phone calls to AOL who referred me to First USA, who by the way referred me back to AOL, a charge of $240 still exsists on my card despite talking to a supervisor who was just class A-1 RUDE. Overall, it's just not worth it as a card, and the internet service is SLOW, even at "High Speed" compared to the broadband connection I'm enjoying now.

Why did you tease me so?

05/20/2002
I loved this card from the start. Low interest rate, large credit amount. All of a sudden my interest rate is over 20% and I'm getting nowhere with my payment. I changed my due date to better suit my paydays but after paying a little over the minimum and never being late with my payment, do they cut me some slack? No way. Do I have to call them and beg for mercy? It shouldn't be that way. You shoul atomatically be rewarded for caring enough about your credit to correct it. Amen!

I have had the AOL Visa for several years. I have also not had AOL for several years. I signed up for the initial low interest rate, but after the introductory period the APR was pretty high. My AOL VISA

04/13/2002
I had an AOL VISA with a large amount of points toward free AOL service. I moved to an area where AOL was no longer a local phone call. I called and asked if I could give my AOL bonus points to my son who had an AOL account with local access. They said "YES" and then when I tried to do this they changed their decision and said "NO". One customer service person didn't seem to know what another customer service person did. Never got to give the points to my son. During this time my APR went up drastically. Closed this account ASAP. Would not recommend to anyone unless you pay your bill in full each month.

BEWARE

04/04/2002
The card was great in the beginning.Low apr of 9.9%. Then I paid it off. Since there was no balance I did not check my apr for a while. Then they sent me an offer to transfer a balance at 5.9%for six months then it would be at my regular apr. So I moved a large amount from another card that was 9.9%. After the six months were up I noticed the finance charge was high. Then had raised my apr to 17%. When I tried to find out why, they did not know. I was never late. Have great credit. I have never even bounced a check in my life. Never late on any bill. Nobody there could tell me why. They told me when it happened and said there must have something in my credit report that month. It was the same month I had payed them off, and the same month I started the process to build a house. The lady mortage company said that month that my credit was one of the best she had ever seen. Firt USA would not give me the same apr again, but said I qualified for the best rate they had at that time, 12.9%. If I qualified for the best rate, why did they have to increase my rate 8 months earlier when they increased it. They did not know. I talked with several people there. No one could tell me anything. I'd transfer everything back to the other card. It was still at 9.9%.

AOL Platinum Visa Card

03/16/2002
I would like to recommend the AOL Platinum VISA card for anyone who uses AOL as their internet service provider. When I first signed up for the card I got a very low APR for balance transfers of only 1.9% which I used to transfer the balance from another credit card. The card has no annual fee. But the best benefit for me is the reward points I earn each month that I use to pay for my AOL service. I earn one reward point for each dollar I charge on my card and I earn two reward points for each dollar I spent for my AOL monthy fee which is automatically billed to this AOL Visa card. When I get 2200 points I can redeem them for one month of free AOL service. And the really great thing is I got 2,200 reward points just for signing up for this card which was one month of free AOL service to begin with! The customer service for this card is great too I called and asked them to add my husband as an autorized user and they sent him a card out immediately, also I called them to increase my credit limit so I could pay off my computer which was financed with Circuit City for one year with no interest. They upped my credit limit as soon as I called. I took my AOL credit card to Circuit City and request to pay off my computer by putting the balance on my AOL Visa card which Circuit City did with no questions asked. This way I received alot of reward points and I did not have to pay any transcation fees for a balance transfer. I really love my AOL Platinum credit card. I use it for everything from grocery shopping, purchasing gasoline, having my auto serviced, etc. And of course AOL bills my card automatically for my monthly AOL service which is $23.95 per month. So my reward points add up very quickly! But I always try my very best to pay my balance in full so I won't have to pay any interest because the APR now is 15.9 % which is a little high I think, because I have another credit card which is also issued by First USA Bank and that card only has a 9.99 % APR. By the way I am able to pay my AOL Visa card bill online and that saves me from paying postage and I am always sure to avoid any late fees! We recently got a home equity line of credit from our bank for prime rate plus 1% with no closing cost so we are paying off all out credit card debt but I will still continue using my AOL Platinum Visa card for my everyday purchases to earn my rewards points. I would like to recommend this card to everyone who uses AOL internet service. I know it will save you a lot of money on internet service fees.

When you use the AOL Visa, you earn points redeemable for AOL fee buy downs. After you charge $2,400.00, you earn a month of free AOL. I use my card for everything--including groceries and gasoline. Absurd finance charges

10/06/2001
The AOL Platinum card is a RIPOFF! Don't fall for their teaser rate. They will jack it up above what they say they will. I have very good credit, but they raised my APR 4%. I nearly always pay my balance off monthly. Last month I didn't and the finance charges were double what I expected. They have instituted an absurd finance charge method, called Two Cycles Average Daily Balance. This is in contrast to the industry standard Average Daily Balance. This allows them to charge finance charges for 2 months instead of 1. Even if you pay off your balance one month, they will charge you finance charges for that month if you don't pay off the balance the following month. I'm saying goodbye to AOL Platinum Visa TODAY!!

Well, I am a 4th year medical student and needing a credit card, applied four years ago for the supposed great benifits. Unfortunetly, to my dismay today the 16th of July recieved a competitors mail (fleet platinum Visa) and they have 0% till april '02 and 9.99% transfer and after 0%. I spoke to AOL first USA financial person and they quoted that the 12.99% is the lowest that they can offer while ever other company offers much lower rates. How is it that when i asked her what she can do she stated that that is the lowest they can offer me even though the fed has lowered interest rates to increase spending and every other company offers lower rates.. Card holder beware

01/16/2001
I signed on to AOL Visa because of an intro offer of 1.9%. I sent in my payment during the Christmas season and they did not receive it on time and charged me a $29 late fee. They have credited it back to me because I have never been late with a payment and have always paid more than the minimum, but since it was late they are going to raise my rate to 19.9%. I called and spoke with someone and told them that if they were going to do that, I would just cancel my card and transfer the balance to another card. They said that they would give me a rate of 12.9%. I am still not satisfied with this and intend to switch. I am also having problems redeeming my points for free AOL internet service. I was entitled to 5 months free and instead AOL has charged my credit card for 2 months of service that should have been covered with my points. My advice to anyone is never to accept any unfair practice of a credit card company. Threaten to close your account unless they make you a better offer. I have found this to work many a time. They are greedy and want your money and most of the time will be willing to work something out with you.

However, they continued to raise my credit limit--and I was stupid enough to use it to nearly the limit--and then when I had nearly used the full credit they suddenly raised the interest rate to 19%!! I called to ask why there had been an interest hike and they explained that they had run another credit check, felt my ratio of debt-to-income was too high and decided to raise the rate. I explained that with that ridiculously high interest rate I would NEVER be able to pay off the balance in a reasonable amount of time and that if they thought I should have a lower credit they shouldn't have raised the limit so high. They only relented by 3% and now charge me the "low interest rate" of 16.9%. I admit that it was my fault for getting into debt in the first place, however, I feel First USA was unabashedly evil in rasing my tempting limits to the point where they had me stuck. No other card will issue to me now---so I have no way of transferring balances and saving a little money as I pay off the balances.

Free AOL Service

This credit card plan is simple. You get reward points for every dollar you charge. I use it to pay for almost anything and as a result I get a premium internet service for free. The trick is that you have to be diciplined and pay the full balance every month to not have interest payments.

American Online Visa

11/27/2000
Having been a customer of America Online for several years, I was glad to get a Visa to reward my online purchases and other purchases with "free" AOL. My online purchases through AOL shopping give me additional reward points to build my point credit even faster. I save internet fees several months of the year. The Customer Service has been very helpful in handling problems with any purchase. Customer Service settled the problem over my auto-pay to my cell-phone service when they were entering invalid information. I have been very satisfied with all aspects of my America Online Visa.

Balance Transfers

10/25/2000
They transfered my balance at 14.9% instead of the 2.9% rate they promised. When I got my first statement, I called to complain. They reviewed my account and sent me a credit. The next month, the same thing happened again. They said they would review the account (again) and it should be corrected on my next statement. That was three months ago and it still is not corrected. I've called more times that I would like to admit and nothing is being done. The last time I called, they said this problem had happened on thousands of accounts, and they are "working on it." I asked for something in writing saying they are working on it, and everyone that I spoke to, even the "supervisors" were rude, and one of them even went so far as to say: "We incorporated in the state of Delaware because the laws there favor us. We don't have to give you anything in writing." I will have the balance paid off in two months (including all of the extra interest because of their mistake) and then I'm closing the account.
Most Attractive Feature: You can use bonus points for free AOL service.
Least Attractive Feature: They transfered thousands of balances at 14.9% instead of 2.9%

apr

10/21/2000
I was a customer of AOL First USA credit card for 5 yrs or so. My APR was 9.9, then out of the blue, a couple of months ago they hiked it 17.9!! We always pay over the minimum, and always before the due date. They said the reason is because every few months or so they do a credit rating... The only thing I can figure is we had a small bill of 75.00 that apparently never made it to the business it was supposed to. About 4 months later, we got a final notice stating it had never been paid. But I look at it this way..I'm paying my credit card on time, paying over what I should, and they hike my apr because of a payment that got lost to someone else?? They said they would lower it to 12.9, then reveiw it again in 6 mos. I said no thank you and cut my card up. Consumers beware!

AOL Platinum VISA

09/04/2000
Cumbersome to get the rewards. Have to call them on phone regularly. No other reward available other than credit on AOL. They also cavalierly decided to not pay a down payment on a resort rental down payment. I received an e-mail from the realtor indicating that the credit card must be old, as they would not pay. The first usa people were unrepentant and huffy when asked why. It was only for $200.00, and I charge that much several times a month. I am looking for a new VISA card! Dick
Most Attractive Feature: Can get credit applied to AOL bill
Least Attractive Feature: Difficult to get the available credit applied
