Dishonest Customer Service
06/20/2004
I had an AMEX Gold card, and I cancelled it after a couple of fights with their customer service.
First, they offered me to upgrade the card to a Platinum card. I said ok. Then I got the card, and finally I figured out (not from their documentation or the phone call where they persuaded me to switch but from their website) that the card carried an annual fee of something C$300-400. I promptly cancelled the new card and remembered the event.
Then somehow they managed to get me on their "Point Accelerator" program. I am sure I wouldn't have signed up if I knew it carried an C$80 yearly fee. Anyways, since I couldn't remember how I got it, I paid it the first time when it was on my bill, but I immediately called them and cancelled it. It was just not worthy for me since I don't use their card very often. Next year, the C$80 was there again. I called them again to cancel it, and asked them how it was possible that I got billed again despite I already cancelled it. They said I didn't cancel it last year. Then they figured out other ways (calling their rewards department) that yes, I did cancel it, so they proceeded to refund my C$80 on my next statement. Which promptly didn't show up on my next statement. Then I called again, and we were back to square one. They told me again that I never cancelled it, so the charges will stay. Then they figured out that yes, I indeed cancelled it (by calling their rewards department again, but their computer system didn't show this info), and I will see the refund on my next statement. I didn't trust them, so I called them again the next day to see if the credit was there. It wasn't, but they put it there. And it happened a couple of times. They just simply didn't credit me with the C$80. Finally I decided to cancel both cards I had from AMEX. They did refund the C$80 finally. But I still get letters from them (I cancelled the cards over a year ago) that they owe me C$80, and let them know how they can send it to me. Indeed, I never answered those letters. That's not my money, and I don't want to get in touch with that outfit again.
Don't bother getting an American Express. Their customer service (at least here in Canada) is not only useless, but they are downright dishonest. I asked a friend who is working in the banking industry, and she said that she also had an AMEX card which she cancelled due to poor customer service.

First of all I was promised additional points for applying for this card. I had to call in every month for them to apply those. Computer couldn't do it automatically. Than the year-end summary showed up too late, end March income taxes were already filed. Then there was another issue to long to get into. I closed this account. Not worth the $130 yearly fee.
