Terrible customer service!

I now plan to get rid of this card due to Amex's incredibly bad customer service. I had moved and then had gotten married and moved again, this time out of state. Apparently, I had set a security question at some point and when I called, I had forgotten the answer. I was able to have that reset, but they were unable to change my name on the account because I hadn't received a billing statement at my new address. I was told to call back in a month. I have now been married for 3 months and still have not been able to change my name on this card, which means that I cannot use it because it doesn't match my identification.

Annual Travel Benefit is great....too bad it's difficult/impossible to collect

I have been trying for over 5 months to get my $150 annual travel benefit rebate applied to my account for travel booked through an American Express participating Travel Agency. Travel agency blames AMEX and AMEX blames travel agency. In the meantime, the customer gets the short end of this deal. If you book your travel expecting to get this benefit, be prepared for a frustrating and long fight.

Bank uses call centers for cardholders who phone in. You can call three times with the same question and get three totally different answers. Voice mail menu is a pain. If you don't have the time to resolve hassles, take a pass on this one.

This is a good card. You get a high limit. I got $7000 and I am a college student with no job (I do have good credit though), It's cash rebate program is fabulous, just use it normally and get a check at the end of the year. It's my everyday card and it has been very dependable for me. Good customer service too.

The cash back feature of this card is great, as is the service from AMEX, but the cash back starts low and graduates to 2% over a certain level, and you're limited by the smaller number of places accepting AMEX.

Good Rebate Card If You Spend > $11k per year

The AMEX Platinum Cash Rebate card has a good reward program if you spend more than $11k per year. Otherwise, a straight 1% cash rebate card like the Citgo Preferred Visa is better. The AMEX web site is excellent and comparable to MBNA's. AMEX customer service has been good the 2 times I've called in the 3 years I've had the card. I would not recommend this card for anyone who doesn't pay via the web because of the short grace period and the time it takes them to process payments. I would not recommend this card for people who don't pay their balance in full each month, because this card has a high variable APR (like most reward cards).

American Express Credit Card Platinum Cash Rebate Review

There are several reasons why the American Express Credit Card is the best card out there. First the cash rebate. Getting money back for purchasing things that you would anyways is great. The second reason is the customer service. 24 hours a day and I have never had any problems getting in touch with a rep. American Express also provides protection agains fraud and theft. For example I purchased a few lenses for my digital camera a few months ago using my American Express Credit Card. When the product arrived I found that the company sent me the wrong items, so I sent back the items and asked for a refund from the company. A few months later the company still hasn't refunded my money so luckily American Express was there to get my money back. American Express was quick about getting my money back and wasn't such a hassle. Overall I am a very satisfied customer with American Express and would recommend it to others.

phone conversation with the customer representative was horrible, but wait, it's even worse with the supervisor. i did not feel they care about my membership. i never paid late. maybe this is the reason why.

Overall the card is good: -no annual fee -cashback automatically credited to your account -online access is great: I use the paybill option to make sure they never get my payment late The only drawbacks are the customer service (not very helpful) and the low credit limit. But overall, I would recommend this card for users who pay off their balance every month.

AEX sends out their bill late (3/6/02 on bill, arrived 3/20/02, due 3/27/02) - watch out if you are late!! the rebate isgood but tiered and not award if you are ever late once in the 12 months. you almost have to send a prepayment before you get your bill.

The cash rebate amount varies according to amount spent per year; a cash back rebate of 0.25% for the first $2,000; 0.5% for amounts from $2,001 up to $5,000; and 1.5% for purchases in excess of $5,000. An additional 0.5% rebate is added for any billing period in which the account carries a balance - so only those individuals who spend more than $5,000 a year and carry a balance will be able to take advantage of the 2% cash back rebate, After spent $3300 ,only get $11.69 rebate.If you could not spend more than$20,000. Try the other card with 1% rebat.

Don't expect AmEx to help you in a dispute

AmEx will not help you in case of a dispute. They pass off the dispute paperwork to the merchant, and send you a copy of their response. Then, as far as they're concerned, the case is closed. You must sue them in order to get any satisfaction in case of a dispute.

Abysmal CS resolution of billing problem

Do not dare be late with a payment. Do not pay twice in one month and expect the second payment to cover the next month. You are in default. And you will stay in default for 12 MONTHS, even after "catching up" and staying current. Your APR goes to 18% on first occasion, then 24% on second occasion. No warnings, no friendly reminder, no explanation, just a late fee and the APR increase. Telephone calls to CS were curt, with no recourse other than "put in your request, which will be answered in 4 to 6 weeks". And they used all 6 weeks, answering with a form letter. The detailed letter, sent throught the mail, explaining the extenuating circumstances was seemingly ignored, without addressing any of the issues for which I requested specific answers. Escalation to CS Supervision to question their decision resulted in a comment that those terms are "in the cardmember agreement", no ifs, ands, or buts. CS Supervision said I could write to the VP of Customer Relations, but the decision was final: the DEFAULT status and 24% APR would remain in effect for 12 months. So much for consideration. Seond, the rebate of up to 2% is not clear. Rebate scales as follows: .25% up to $2K .5% 2K to $5K 1.5% $5K and above +.5% on revolving balance It is unlikely you see the advertised 2% unless you carry a large balance. I put $10K on card, but did not carry a revolving balance, and received a $124 rebate, or 1.2%. I have had an EXCELLENT credit history with one card for over 20 years without ever once having a late fee, an APR increase (other than what all clients were levied), and full, satisfactory, and personal resolution of CS issues. I cannot say the same for American Express Platinum Rebate Card. What makes this situation worse is that the sponsor, CostCo, for whom I have great respect, is tarred with this brush, not to mention their paying a percentage fee for my $11K of purchases. I gave them $11,000 of my business and this is how I got treated. If other clients are receiving this sort of treatment, AmEx may well be on the same road as Providian Bancorp, whose unscrupulous practices were in the end brought to court. The customer is NOT first with this company.

membership rewards

After spending 20K in a few months and noticing no membership rewards points being counted I called to get it straightened out. After very long on-hold I was told it would take 2 weeks to get it fixed. I called back because they were still not counted. This time I was told they were "sorry" but this card is not eligible. I have not seen that documented yet. Only vague reference to some cards not eligible. They had apparently enrolled the card earlier without this comment. Guess who cancelled their card.

No Auto Insurance and small travel accident insurance

There is No Auto Insurance and small $100K travel accident insurance for a platinum card! Other platinum credit cards (MC and Visa) offers auto insurance and travel accident insurance of $1Million. They gave me a very low credit limit; lower than my other platinum and gold cards and even lower than my regular Visa. Applied for another MC later and they gave me more than 5 times the credit limit of the Amex. Not accepted everywhere.

There is a 20 day grace period-- admittedly short. However, it's worse than that. Even if you get your payment in the mail the same day the bill arrives, it will be posted late. Their explanation: Once the payment arrives, they will not post it for seven (7) days. This is BS.

Good card but there are better out there

I've had this card around a year now; previously had an Optima card that I cancelled due to an unclear interest rate offer. Cash rebate on the card is good; graduated rate ends up breaking even with Discover at $8,000; Chase Shell Mastercard and First USA GE Rewards offer more benefits at the same $8,000 level. It all really depends on cardholders annual spending amounts.

Am Express was a problem 12 years ago and again when I gave it another chance by opening a new account. I opened on-line and somehow they did an unauthorized $1700.00 balance transfer from my mastercard....very scary as I never gave them any info about my other credit cards....also about 30% of the places (from markets to gift shops and restaurants) will not accept amex because they take high % from retailers. so what's the point of carrying this lousy card?

hi, there: I think this card is overall good to me. First, it have cash back, so as it says, up to 2% cash back on all you purchase. this is just like Discovery card, And I think the rate is better than Discover Card. Plus, they have some promotion program on running, such as spend $300 in one particular month, then they will give u $20.(this promotion had end now, but I think they will run again) in addition, the customer service is good. However, there is some drawback on that card. Such as If you send the payment not in time, say one day later than the deadline of the payment, they will charge you very expensive late fees as well as the financal charges.b So I just one day late for my $7 payment, they charge me $33+$1 for that So my conclusion is if you are a responsible man(alway pay the payment on time). this card is a good choose

The purpose of this card is to make you pay fees. Whatever you save from the cash back you will loose in fees if you are even a second late in paying. They have a habit of sending out your payment as close to the due date as possible to maximize the chance you will have to pay a fee.

i am pleased with my amex plat. cash back card. they work well w/ me, and i have recently had a biling dispute. they seem like they are handling it rather well, and i dont even have to pay finance charges on that disputed amount.

Amex is the biggest liar!

I had an Amex Platinum Cash Rebate Card. I charged thousands on a big purchase and when the bill came I posted a payment online. I selected 'pay in full'. Last time I spoke English it means pay up the balance. To my horro Amex charged me huge amounts of interest. When I called customer service I was told that 'Pay in full' menas pay the minimum balance to Amex. Thus I was cheated out of my rebate AND I OWED THEM INTEREST INSTEAD!! I was so angry I closed the account. I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS AGAIN!

The Amerian Express Platinum Cash Rebate is part of Optima cards. You can carry a balance or pay in full each month. You can pay your bill by phone or online which is very convenient for me, and you get excellent American Express 24 hour customer service.

Excellent, unknown card

This card is part of the Optima family, meaning a balance can be kept on it. There is absolutely no annual fee, you get American Express customer service and special offers, and you get up to 2% cash back! You only get the full 2% if you carry a balance. I will receive 1.5% because I pay-in-full every month. (There are also spending levels required to get certain percentages back, but they are reasonable.)
