"Company ruled by computer on personal service."
Having been a customer since 1977 and even ealier. I recently missed 3 low payments out of neglect, were dealing with life crisis. It did not relfect our abiltiy to pay it re Our credit was reduced from 17,500,00 to 2500 by a computer prgram. I tried to get this reviewed by a human being instead of a computer but no dice. I pointed out that his was a competive market and I get cards in the mail all them time. They claim they have no choice. I would prefer to deal with a company that has people making decsions rather than computers. It reminds of the differnce between West Jet and Air Canada. Guess which one is growing.? The one that permits staff to solve customer issues on their own. I think I willl go discuss the issue with a credit union.

"CIBC Doesn't Care About You"
I had my CIBC Visa card for 10 years, and had maintained it in good standing for that time.
I would probably have recommended it, too, as a good low-interest card, until I fell on hard times, and fell behind in my payments. The CIBC was not forgiving, nor did they work with me in my attempts to make good.
My husband, the sole breadwinner at the time, was laid off just before Christmas (2003). We fell 2, and then 3 payments behind.
I was on the phone with the CIBC (and other creditors) almost constantly. It was a very stressful time.
One of the biggest drawbacks to CIBC customer service was that every time I spoke to a CIBC representative, it was a different person who may or may not know what had been discussed during previous telephone conversations, and who were relying on notes posted in their computer system from previous reps which were, at best, incomplete. I would recommend that if you find yourself in this situation you ask to be assigned one person to deal with, as at least then you will not waste so much time reviewing what was last talked about.
At one point, I was offered a personal loan to cover the amount owing on the card, which was later recinded by another CIBC representative (this would have allowed me to start making monthly payments without having to find the entire behind amount).
Aonther time, I was told that if I could begin making monthly payments for 3 months that they would not close my account. I found out later that the card had, in fact, already been cancelled 2 months previously, but no one thought to tell me.
I was interested in preserving my credit, and made an attempt to institute small payments to show my good faith, but the CIBC were insisting on a lump sum of $2000, which there was no way I could come up with at the time.
I pointed out that I had been a long-time customer for 10 years, given them many dollars in interest, and asked for their help. If they could forgive the past payments, I would start making monthly payments. No dice. (I had a second credit card who happily did agree to do this for me, and they will get my future business).
I told them if they couldn't help me to make monthly arrangements, that in order to clear the debt I would have to sell my home. It made no difference. They wanted their pound of flesh, no matter the cost to me.
I understand that banks have certain criteria that they are obliged to follow when making business decisions, but of all the banks I've ever dealt with the CIBC is the most heartless. Not only would they not help me to begin to reinstate monthly payments, they made it more difficult by hiking the interest rate.
My long-term standing meant nothing. The many dollars in interest they had gleaned from my patronage over the years meant nothing. The fact that my husband did finally go back to work in February and we could begin making regular payments again, also did nothing to sway the CIBC. I surely hope there are no other CIBC customers who fall on temporary hard times.
I did sell my house, and I did pay the account, in full (and with a schwack of interest, too), 6 months after falling behind. So, presumeably they are happy. I will never deal with them again.
If you are looking for a bank with which you can develop a long-term personal relationship, and that will be there when you need them, I would not recommend the CIBC.

"interest rate"
what attracted me to this card was the low interest rate,I do wish it had some of the options of other cards like travellers insurance and rental car extra insurance but then I guess you have to give up something for the low interest rate

"CIBC Select Visa a Rip-Off"
FYI: I've had it for years yet never receive any communication from them regarding positive benefits to having it or even special offers to transfer balances at a limited-time-offer interest rate - the U.S. credit cards have them beat hands-down on this

"CIBC Visa service"
I would just like everyone to know that dealing with Visa and CIBC Visa has been a joy. The low interest rate combined with great service has really benefited me.
We ran into a problem with an attempt with fraud and CIBC Visa handled this problem in a professional and just manner. I would recommend this card to anybody. |
