"Just don't do it."
For a student card, they will destroy you if you make 1 late payment. I have payed every bill on time in the last 3 years except for 1 late payment, and my APR is now over 30%. RIDICULOUS.

"Unwilling to help"
This card is actually owned by my son who was a student at the University of Illinois. He had lost his job there, lost his student loans and consequently incurred a large debt, one of which was his Chase credit card. I decided it was time to help him and took out a home equity loan. I started calling his debtors to see if we could eliminate some of the interest and late charges to avoid bankrupcy.

It was quite pleasing to work with some people who understood his problems. The University accepted the initial tuition and took off all of their interest and late fees. His one year lease was paid off with no charges. His smallest bill was the Chase credit card. He only owed $715. I called and asked if they would be willing to come down with the charges in order to get it completely paid off. The lady I spoke to said they would have to at least get the principal back which was $420. It was sent for review and turned down, saying it wasn't large enough for any consideration. I called again to voice my complaint and the lady I spoke with stated there had been nothing written about how much debt he was in. So I gave her the information and it was sent in again for review with an offer of paying $500 and again was turned down.

I called a third time and asked to speak to their supervisor. I was told that the supervisor was unavailable and would call me back. That was a week ago. I called a fourth time and was told that the supervisors are very busy.

Even though this is a small amount of money compared to many other debts, it's frustrating that they would rather teach students that these companies prey on you and would rather let you drown in your debts than to work things out. There was never any counter offer or a willingness to let him pay it off with no more late fees or interest as I know other companies have done. Because of that uncooperative attitude, I will spread the word. They could be an excellent credit card company as long as you pay your bills but hope that you never get in trouble.
