A pretty good rewards card
04/24/2012
I have been a Discover card holder for a year now and have never had any problem. Despite the measly .25% cashback that you make on "everything else," by charging only the 5% rotating categories like gasoline and restaurants when applicable, and paying off my balance in full every time, I have made out pretty good direct depositing my rewards into my bank account. As long as I stick to the rotating categories, the cashback adds up relatively quick, everything else goes on my Amex Blue where I get at least 1%. The website is simple to use and easy to make payments so there is no confusion and supposed "late" payments even though they were mailed weeks before the due date, like I've had with citibank. Customer service is pretty good, in my own experiences you get someone who actually speaks English well, and you get them quickly with minimal hold time. The account managers can be a little pushy with trying to sell you something, but they will take no for an answer if you don't want it.
I am 26 years old and currently have 2 Visas, an American Express, and a Discover, and the Discover card is my favorite overall. For someone who intends to pay off their balance in full every month, I recommmend this card. If you tend to carry a balance each month, there are lower interest alternatives out there that would suit your needs better.
Most Attractive Feature: No annual fee and great cashback

Lost twice with Discover Card
03/27/2012
First time was about 6 years ago. Got the card, seem fine, used it, no problem, first and second bill lots of extra fees, I cancelled the card in the second month. I have a high credit rating and used a lot of cards, so it's not just me. Second time is now. I got the card to transfer a balance from other cards to take advantage of the 0% interest and no transfer fees. Applied and was approved right away and told everything was processed. Come to find out they did not transfer the balances which in turn ran up charges on my other cards. Discover did nothing to fix the problem but luckily the other company was nice enough to waive the fees even though I was transferring the balance and closing out their card. The only thing you discover with Discover card is that they really suck.

change in on-time payment bonus
02/29/2012
I was stunned (never received a letter, have online statements) that they changed their pay-on-time bonus. I once received one months interest back, over $100 every six months that I used as a statement credit to help reduce my balance. Now they offer a measly 5%, which is now only $40 every six months. The guy at discover tried to say it has been that way since 2010; however, I received 2 bonus payments back in 2011. I track it so that I can apply the bonus as quickly as possible to reduce the amount of interest as quickly as possible. I think more people are making an effort to pay off quicker, and they were losing money. The discover rep. tried to say more people wanted their bonus earlier (instant gratification mumbo-jumbo). I can't understand how anyone would prefer $40 to $150???? Very, very disappointed in the card now. I don't charge anymore trying to pay off my cards, so I don't get any cashback rewards for purchases. Will be making a greater effort to either consolidate, transfer, or pay-off this card now.
Most Attractive Feature: Decent interest rate.

Finally cancelled it
12/01/2011
I have had this card for 2 years & I cannot count the endless problems I have had. There online website has so many restrictions coming up with a name/password that the next time I went on I couldn't figure out what I had put. They don't have one person who speaks English when I call and end up just hanging up because they never know how to answer my questions. I was told they were going to reimburse me if I stuck with their credit card and never got the money. I haven't used the card since May where it was fully paid off and I was waiting for the money to come to me. I just cancelled the card yesterday (Nov. 30) and they told me I owed THEM $65 for my annual fee and for not using the credit card. Where they pulled this number out of- I have no idea. I paid it just so I could close the account for good. It was worth more to me to cancel this card and ruin my credit score than to have to deal with the headache. Good luck to anyone who uses it. I've had minor problems with my AMEX and Capital One- give them a try before you deal with the mess of a Discover.

Worst credit card experience
11/03/2011
Discover card is tricky from the very start. They signed me up when I was a college student with no income (poor judgement on my part) and have refused to work with myself or my debt consolidation program to pay off my balance. Only about 25% of my current balance is from purchases. The rest are fees and interest.
Most Attractive Feature: I have nothing good to say about Discover.
Least Attractive Feature: High fees, high interest hikes, due date changes, corrupt company, poor customer service

Worst card I ever had. Can't wait to get rid of it!
08/27/2011
This card has been a nightmare ever since I got it. First discover increased my rate to 19.99 without a reason and when I called they said the markets are bad for everyone. I believed. They kept sending the preapproved offers for personal loans. I ignored them for quite a few months. Once the interest rate they offered looked so good, I made a call asking about the loan. After a few questions, the customer care person rejected the application because I was not a US citizen. Didn't you know that before sending a million pre-approval letters? And now after I bought a house I thought my credit got better after paying mortgage for about 6 months, discover cuts down my credit limit to half. Thank you very much Discover. I will pay off the balance and close the account for good and I can't wait to do it.
Most Attractive Feature: Nothing really!!!

"Pre-Approved"
08/11/2011
I received a letter by mail stating I was pre-approved for a Discover card. When I called in to accept the offer I was transferred to an analyst. This fellow was polite but literally interrogated me about my entire life and asked questions about every account I have or had. He asked about my career, my property, my education...details one would expect to be asked if a crime had been committed. This went on for over 30 minutes. I finally told the analyst that I was not comfortable with this process particularly since my credit score is 723.

APR Rate Escalates WITHOUT Cause 7.99 to 19.99
04/28/2011
The initial APR of our Discover Card obtained in 2007 escalated to a 19.99% APR increase. Unable to maintain a 19.99% increase on a high balance card, I called in to customer service for help.
I was routed into a hardship program for 12 months at 5.99%. At the start of the program Discover Card will have you give them your checking account number upfront, and automatically deduct the payment each month on the due date. I did this and for 12 months the payments automatically were debited from my checking account. Everything went smoothly, and I continually checked in with the hardship department throughout the program, who advised me on several occassions, that while they can not 'predict' my interest rate upon completion of the program, that they are certain with my excellent payment record they would be able to lower my 19.99% rate that I had before the program.
The program ended in April, and then for April's statement, they backdated the interest rate back to the last payment. The new high interest rate (not the program rate)!! This immediately put me over the limit on DAY 1 of being out of the program.
I immediately called on Day 1 of being out of the program and tried to get this resolved as well as find out what my new APR rate would be.
To my dismay, shock, horror and utter disbelief they state that I do not QUALIFY for a lower APR at this time, and that the 19.99% will be the rate.
I pressed on for a reason as to why my APR request was denied, and they said I had been late 2 times in the past 12 months.
That was a bold face inaccuracy. Being in the program that I just completed, you are not allowed to be late. Everything is automatic. If you are late you would have been un-enrolled from the program.
I called back to the original department that I always dealt with (the hardship department) and they confirmed that I had PERFECT payments on the program. Also, the gentleman said it was also Over the Limit. Well, my account was NOT over the limit until the statement cycled the night before, at which time the program ended, and they BACKDATED the NON-PROGRAM interest rate of 19.99% back to the last program payment. Then it brought me over the limit. Had I known they were going to play games, I would have paid EXTRA last month to leave room for the NEW HIGH INTEREST RATE to be applied to the outstanding balance. I'm not an idiot, I know how to figure out APR on a daily basis to make sure that we would not come in over our limit. And had we received the required mandated government disclosure as noted in the credit card reform act, we should have been advised 45 days beforehand that our rate was being restored to the previous rate. This is just another example of how Discover Card is NOT TRANSPARENT.
Discover Card, in my opinion plays games with you once your balance reaches a high balance. They lure you in, wait for the balance to get high and then start playing games. The past 12 months they have reassured me that I would be getting a great APR at the end of the program. This did not happen and I followed all the rules explicitly. I kept detailed logs of all dates and times of my calls, complete with who I spoke to and detailed conversations. Then I printed them out and kept them in a folder.
There are lots of cards out there. If you really want to know how to shop for a card, go to lowcards.com and search there.
Discover Card will be hearing from me again. I will be posting a You Tube Video and I will be contacting the Local News Media, I will be sending information to CNN Jennifer Westhoven and to Suze Orman. This type of practice will be exposed to the fullest extent of what I can do as 1 little citizen. This is not right, and I am going to stick up for myself and the others who are getting shafted by the Big Corporations.
I have also provided the e-mail they sent me congratulating me on completing the program. Note once again, I could not have completed the program had I been late 2x in 12 months. That is the stipulation of the program. No late payments.
LETTER PASTED BELOW:
Congratulations on successfully completing the special payment program for your Discover Card Account.

Discover card has no customer loyalty and will not follow through on disputes.

My husband and I both have accounts with Discover Card. I have been member since 1991 and my husband since 2002. We always make our payments and pay the before the due date. Our problem starts with a vacation package purchased 4/21/09. We intended to go to Peru March of 2010 but due to mudslides knocking out the only rail to Machu Picchu we had to reschedule leaving 10/23/10. We got a phone call on 10/19/10 from Latin America for less that they were canceling our vacation due to lack of funds on their part and that we could dispute the charges with our credit card. Knowing that time was of the essence we immediately got online and disputed the charges for the land portion of the package. We were told through chat that we would have to fax a request for dispute for the air portion of that package. We sent the fax the very next day. The land package showed up immediately as a temporary credit. 10/25/10 we got an email requesting that we call Discover card. Even though I sent the fax to the number that we had been given it was rerouted to the wrong department. When I called they said that they would reroute it correctly.
I tried to keep a close eye on the dispute waiting for the temporary credit of the flights but was slightly derailed when my father had an accident and was in the Burn ICU in an induced coma from October until December. It was 1/2/11 when I finally inquired by phone call about the air portion of our travel package. It appeared that they showed that they got the fax on 10/20/2010 but something was still wrong. I was asked to fax the information again. I did 1/3/11 and by the next day the air had been credited to the account 1/17/11 Discover Card reversed the temporary credit for the land portion. Discover only sent one e-mail on 10/19/10 to the merchant and the other people that were going with us on this trip got ALL of their money back 11/22/10. THEY used a Visa. Though I can't prove it, it certainly appears that Discover card forgot all about the land portion of the dispute until I tried to check on the airline portion of it in January. Had they made other attempts at contacting the merchant they could have resolved the issue. Complaints to the CEO have only gotten the response that Discover card is not legally obligated because the purchase date was over 60 days ago. Not that unusual for a travel package. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and when that is resolved I plan to cancel both of our Discover Cards.

Discover Has Poor Cardmenber Service and Loyalty
01/18/2011
Twelve months ago my balance was over $7,000 and my credit limit was $7500.00 I called customer service to see about lowering my interest rate and they agreed to lower it to 9.9% but I could not use my card. Since then I have paid down my balance to less $650.00 and the 12 month program for lower rates ended. I called customer service to see about reinstating my credit limit and they declined. Being treated like a bum I then closed the account as I feel that is no way to treat a good paying customer who has been with Discover since 1994. My wife told me that I should not have closed the account as that would have an immediate negative effect on my credit so I called customer service to recind my request and they denied it. I will never give Discover another dime of interest so I paid off my balance in Full and wouldn't take a card from them if they gave me $1,000.00. A REALLY BAD CREDIT CARD COMPANY!!

Purchases get declined due to fraud detector system
12/16/2010
This year I decided to do my holiday shopping with my Discover card. On Monday, I made about 5-6 purchases totally about $250 on Amazon.com & they all appeared to go through. Mind you, I wasn't even close to my limit, which is $1,000. On Tuesday night, I received 5-6 emails from Amazon stating I needed to re-enter my credit card info. So I did & they appeared to go through just fine. On Wed. a.m., I went to the grocery store and tried to purchase some food w/my Discover card. It was declined. I called their customer service - and they told me a fraud alert had been put on my account, the agreed to remove the fraud alert right away. They didn't phone or email me, even though they had this info. on file. I asked them why purchases during the holiday season (in small amounts) that were shipped to my street & billing address were declined. So now it's Thursday, 12/16 and I get home from work to find 6 new emails from Amazon - yes, they declined my purchases. I called Discover & they told me their automatic fraud detection system had acted up again. So now I have to try to go do my holiday shopping this weekend, when I have absolutely no time - and am starting from scratch at the last minute, all thanks to Discover. Why bother having a credit card when they don't let you use it? Their over-sensitive fraud detector would prohibit me from using this card on vacation, as I can only imagine how badly it would react to charges coming from another country! I'm closing this account - they are ridiculous & their customer service reps kept reading scripts to me, which only served to piss me off more. I've discovered I'm done with Discover.

We have had a Discover card for over 15 years. recently we noticed the interest rate was 28.99%. We called and were told that because we had gotten other new credit cards that our Discover rate went up. We had not had a late payment in over two years. On our statement it showed we had a balance of $6200, the minimum payment due was $140 of which $126 was finance charges. WOW! If we never used the Discover card again and sent the minimum payment I dont think we would ever pay this card off. The Discover rep basically said too bad, that's your new rate. We would be better off borrowing money from a loan shark! Eight days later we paid off the account and closed it. I will NEVER use a Discover Card again.

Discover refused my request to take a charge off of my card, even though the merchant never delivered what I had ordered. The "customer service" guy offered no help at all. I got the impression that his job is to make you hang up the phone. He would would not process my dispute and just kept talking in a patronizing tone. You are far better off disputing a charge with with a trusted local bank. The sad fact is that their 1-800 customer service people talk off of a script and are only there to delay or deny you from talking to someone at the company with a brain, who apparently have no interest in talking to you anyhow. Credit cards work fine until someone tries to screw you over, and then the only thing that matters is how responsive and responsible the credit card company is. Get your credit card elsewhere, because Discover isn't the company that's going to help you.

Discover is misleading
12/20/2004
I received a Discover Card invitation in the mail for pre-approval. The letter stated that I have been making such good progress in re-establishing my credit. I wondered how they knew this information about me and thought that it would be a great idea to transfer my low secured cards to an account with a higher credit limit. However, I called to ensure that my application had been received by the Discover processing center and the representative stated that I was declined. The invitation is very misleading. For the record, 4 years ago, I fell hard on my luck and fell into financial hardship with my credit cards. I am currently debt free, I make over $40,000 a year, and I have never paid late on all current credit cards. Credit card companies should not send invitations to consumers that "seem" to guarantee you for a card and then turn around and "smack you in the neck" with a decline to approval.

I had a discover card for 4 years and only 2 of them were good. For the first 2 years I didn't get any telemarketing calls or any suspicious fees. I didn't even have a problem with my payments posting to the account. Then all of a sudden I got a phone call about a Profile Protection Plan. They sent me a packet to read and if I was interested I had to sign it and send it back. Well, I wasn't interested so I shredded it and forgot about it. When I got billed for it I called the customer service rep. He said that by not sending the papers back I was stating that I was interested. That wasn't the only fee on my statement. I have subscriptions to 3 magazines. You would think that this has nothing to do with the Discover Card, but it does. They renewed my subscription ($180.00)without asking me first. I ordered those magazines with a different credit card I had at the time (which I no longer have). Why would Discover renew the subscription for me? I don't know, I was hoping someone could tell me since the customer service rep couldn't.

Watch for tricky 0% interest offers with Discover Card!
08/25/2004
I have had the Discover Card for 10 years -- it was good, but simply was not accepted at as many places as other cards, so I wanted to simplify and cancel the card. When I called to do so, the customer service representative convinced me to take a 0% for "the life of the loan" cash advance which required only 2 actions on my part: make the minimum monthly payments and make a single purchase before my April 2004 billing date. I asked him if a $1.00 charge on April 2nd would fit this criteria. "Yes" was the answer since my billing date was on April 13th. "You could even charge $0.01, as long as it was before the billing date." Great! So I took a cash advance for $20,000 and made monthly payments, and made a $0.02 transaction on April 2nd. Wow -- everything was as promised. My automatic payments were set up to keep paying off the card, when I discovered in August that I had over $1000 in finance charges at 19.99%. Whooa! It turns out that I had to keep making at least 1 purchase per month every month after April! Clearly, I could have done this just as easily as in April, but I did not know -- the customer service rep did not tell me about this. It was in the fine print of the offer, but no appeal to Discover Card at this point made it possible to recover all of the finance charges. I paid of the remaining balance immediately, but was only able to recover $700 of the charges (which Discover Card had told me was all they could do -- that even that was generous on their part). I explained the situation, that I never carried a balance in the past except for this offer, and we agreed that I had been an excellent customer. I tried to close the account, but the customer service rep convinced me that I had a better chance getting back the rest of the money by remaining a customer and trying another appeal later. This does work -- they can only do one major refund per call or perhaps per billing period. Still, a very bad experience that makes me want to cancel the card and stay away from Discover Card.

I've had a Discover card for 12 years, and have had only dispute with them -- which they solved to my satisfaction with one short phone call. I only recently started using their web site for payments, etc., but it's well-designed and easy to figure out where you need to go. Highly recommend the card -- but if you routinely carry a balance on your card, the interest rates are probably going to be an issue for you.

Discover was fine until I wanted to cancel the account. They shut off the card and sent me a letter telling me the for "my convenience", if I chose to use my card again, they would institute a credit check and re-open my account.
Well, it turns out that someone fraudently used my account for something and I got a nice letter from Discover thanking me for reconsidering my decision to cancel the account. I got a new card in the mail a few days later, welcoming me to Discover card and saying they look forward to a long relationship with me...
I called them back and told them to cancel my account but they said it was not possible because I had open charges pending on the account (fraudulent charges mind you!). They connected me to the fraud center and took my info. After much effort, I was able to block the charge and get my account closed.
A week later, I got a letter from Discover thanking me for notifying them of the fraud and that, "a new card will be issued to you shortly so you can continue to receive the benefits of Discover card". I had to make one more phone call to Discover to tell them I did not want them to actually open a new account when they closed the old one for fraud.

Can it get any worse!
10/15/2003
Want a discover? Dont! The rates are rediculous compared to others. I have had five credit cards, discover is the worst. My payment history is perfect. I know how some cards will jack your rates up if you have a poor payment history and I can understand that, but having a perfect payment record means nothing to them apparrantly. Secondly, (this is more for people that already have a discover card) how many times do you have to ask someone not to call you in regards to telemarketing? Its rediculous. When they call, they wont take no as an answer. You say no and you get signed up for crap anyway. Then you have to call customer service, who tells you they cant help you, and pass you along to someone else that try's to do what?! They try to get you to keep crap you dont want and didnt ask for in the first place, and then they try to get you to sign up for something else!! Anytime you call customer service listen to the pitches they give you. They're marketing is so intrusive, you cant simply take care of business without being harrassed for something thats gonna cost a lot of money. And speaking of customer service, what customer service? They dont know the meaning of it. They dont take the time to listen, they seem to want to pass you off to someone else, and as I said earlier, just seem more interested in selling you something than to take care of the customer (you and I). Lets talk about the cash back they like to claim is so good. Anyone take a look at the small print? You only get 1/4% on your first $1500, 1/2% up to $3000 and 1% over $3000. Seems they change the rules on this all the time. Going back through my records I find that they have lessened the amount from previous years. And to top it off they "say" they offer 2% on the cash back, but it ends up being thats only if you want a gift certificate instead of "cash". If you advertise cash back 2% isnt that supposed to mean "cash", not gift certificate?! Seems they change the rules on the gift certificates too! They catch you with the offer (the bait), then switch the terms of the offer w/o any notification. Isnt that called bait and switch and is illegal? There is no benefits to speak of for carrying their card. No travel benefits, etc. I feel like I could go on even more, but I get tired of the whole thing. Considering discover, check everything else out first..trust me. I know.

And what a fight to get it removed. TERIBBLE customer service. I also got the impression that this was common practice. I can't begin to tell you how horrible this card is. In this economy this company should be ashamed of themselves and their high interest rates. It is a sin that they continually charge over limit fees when the reason I went over limit was because of the finance charges! They have a 1 year window where they will lower your rate and that is it...back to 23...it is disgusting.
They offer no help at all in assisting you with credit problems.
Horrible card and horrible service.

Discover is a great card if you always pay in full every month! It has cash back bonus. although... limited to a certain extend because they always advertise the "Up to 2% cash back" when really...they only start you out with half a percent and you have to work your way up with to the 1%. I think it was... the first $3000 you charge you'll get 1/2% then after $5000, you get 1%. Also the restrictions aren't that great... u have to accumulate $20 before you can redeem it.
Once when I called to see if a refund was posted to my card yet because the merchant said they had already credited me but my account online didn't show it, the customer service was extremely rude. All i wanted to know was whether they got it or not...but then they transfer me to a disputes representative and they did NO help but act Extremely rude TO me... I was really suprised because they had a great record with me until up to that point. On the other hand, the website also works great! and you can do online payments with no extra charge.

Too Many Changes
06/13/2003
I have been a Cardmember for 20 years; since they started. In recent years they have made changes that are NOT beneficial to the cardmember, but to THEMSELVES.
It used to be they rarely enforced the LATE FEE if you paid within about 10 days of your due date; now if you are even ONE DAY LATE, they sock you with a late fee.
They used to pay the cashback bonus on the yearly "Aniversay Date" of your signup with them; now they hold the money UNTIL you reach $20 or more which could be longer than a year.
They LIE when you confront them with a complaint that a CSA did NOT tell you something they are supposed to, but somehow forgot to ask! They conviently DO NOT record & archive conversations which you must verbally "agree" to something like a service charge for a Balance transfer then claim they told you and you agreed to it when you contest the charge. Unless you have recorded the conversation yourself, it's your word against theirs.

IT DOES NOT "PAY" to DISCOVER!
05/17/2003
Both my wife and I have had Discover card accounts for about 3 years. The starting intro APR was great and so was the
customer service during that time. Then Discover Card put a little flyer (in with all the other ads & junk) stating that
there is an important amendment to our card agreement. Read the fine print...a 4% APR increase.
We pay our bills ontime, plus more than the minimum! The cards have both been paid off several times as well!
We have credit reports printed every 6 months to ensure that nothing strange shows up on our credit. There was
NO reason for the increase. After faxing this PROOF to Discover, they returned the APR to the original rate. BUT the
next year they did the same thing...and so did we! Now, its the third year in a row..another 4% increase to fight!
I think we should all cancel our Discover cards and transfer the balances to a better company. I'm tired of PAYING to Discover!

Poor Customer Service!
03/12/2003
The Discover card is a mediocre card, no real benefit in having this card and not widely accepted. Contacted customer service with a question regarding a possible balance transfer to this card. I had received checks and an offer for balance transfer at a very, very low rate. I was skeptical, and good thing I called. Customer service rep was "generic" and uninterested in my questions (actually was sounding annoyed that I was asking quesitons about the transfer offer). When I asked about this thing of "two cycles" interest, she became very abrupt and said, "Look do you you want to transfer or not, I have other callers holding!" I was floored and to say the least, I DID NOT transfer, and I have since CLOSED my Discover account and took my business to a new cashback visa card--in fact, Bank of America has a "rewards" visa that pays a cash rebate (in the form of a check, once a year) AND it includes BALANCE TRANSFERS!! So I got a cash rebate for transferring my balance from another card. Thanks Discover, for helping me to go and look for a BETTER card deal than what you have!

Low balance transfer rate, low purchase rate, not only for the first 6 months, but after that they were hardly going to rise.
The first 6 months past without a problem, then all of a sudden, i recieved a letter through the post, the rates were going to rise dramatically !
I tried to contact them by phone, but couldn't get a straight answer out of them.

Due to closing our businsess and 4 hospitalization, we got behind on credit card payments. (that came from the business) Other cards we dealt with like Fleet and Emerge made things worse not better. But a customer service person at Discover helped set us up on a payment plan for a year to help us get back on our feet. They reduced our payment to a set amount, did away with overlimit fees and reduced our APR from 20+ to 9.99. As long as we paid on time it remained in effect. At the end of the year we had improved our credit enough to refinace our house and pay off our credit cards. The whole time they were friendly and helpful to deal with. Thanks Discover

Two decades of membership with DISCOVER
02/03/2003
Being a Charter Member of DISCOVER card since they started back in 1982, I have seen them go from being a card that nobody had heard of, much less accept, to being the 3rd MAJOR card in America.
They started out when Greenwood Trust came up with a 'novel' idea of having a Credit Card with NO annual fee and a Cashback Bonus to-boot! Thru the years they grew more accepted at various merchants til eventually Greenwood sold the card off to another financial corporation who pretty much kept it the same as it was. Your cashback bonus percentage depended on your total accumulated spending for the year. On the anniversay date (when you were approved for the card) you got the option to donate your bonus with a matched contribution by Discover Financial, to charatable organization or receive a paper check for the amount.
When they were sold yet again to the current owner, things changed radically. In the past you could be a few days late (and sometimes if you had a good record, a whole month) with your payment and not be docked a late fee. NOW, if you are even one day late paying your bill, you get socked with a $35 charge!! The old company used to even offer a "Skip a Month" option to customers who were always prompt but were caught short one month; no late fee, just Interest.
This latest company has done away with the Aniversary Date payment of your cashback bonus!! NOW, you must accrue a minimum of $20 berfore they will send you a check for the amount!! Also, their Customer Service is the pitts! They failed to inform me of a Service Charge for doing a balance transfer then tried to claim their CS agent HAD informed me and that I had agreed to it! BULLPUCKEY!! They could not prove this since it had not been "recorded for quality assurance" yet they refused to reverse the $29 charge! SO, now I will badmouth them whenever asked. They are no-longer the friendly financial institution that I "grew up with" but are now just as greedy as ENRON and WORLDCOM, etc...

We have been very satisfied with our Discover Classic Card. We were looking for a card with an intoductory offer and found a good one. We were able to balance tranfers from all of our higher apr credit cards. The process is very easy. There is also no fee when we transfer balances. The 0 apr saves us so much money. The Discover Card comes in an American Flag design, which is very nice and patriotic. The customer service we receive from Discover is very good. It has been so easy for us to call them up and complete our balance transfers in a matter of minutes. Our monthly statements are very easy to read. It is so nice to see our balance go down each month bc of the APR. After our year is up we still get a pretty low APR, which is comforting. I would recommend this card to someone looking for a credit card with an introductory no APR. This can save you money and you dont have to look at all those incredibly high interest rates. It was so nice to pay off all of our high interest rate cards and throw them away!!!!!!

My Discover Card was the first credit card that I ever had. When I first got it, I was given a $1000 limit which was very good, considering I was a college student starting out in the world of credit. The card company has worked with me and has raised my limit over the past 4 years quite a bit. The company is very helpful and attentive. My only complaint is in their rewards program. I know that a lot of cards give you miles and such. Discover only offers cash back bonuses. I spend a bit... and I have only received on the average about $1.50. Watching the commercials with the guy receiving over $150.00 makes me wonder. Oh well. This is a good starter card for kids that are just beginning to learn about credit. I would definately recommend it.

My experience was very bad. I became aware of a fraudulant charge on my account. I called Discover (prior to the them actually transferring the funds). They said there was nothing I could do until the amount was billed, then I could only dispute. The dispute department took the complaint, but because the received a response from the vendor (completely false), they closed the dispute. Apparently, ANY response from a vendor overrides a cardmember complaint. In addition, they asked that I "prove" that I didn't give that vendor my cardnumber! I wonder how this could be done? (I had given them my American Express number - who, when the vendor refused to perform the services, responded quite well to my complaint and did not allow the charge to go through. Unfortunately, they got my Discover Card and charged it when they found the American Express card blocked for them)

say no, or actually read your card member rights booklet. It has a number you can opt out of.
Also, re: rude customer service reps; not all are rude. Take from me, I actually work in customer
service (not for a card company, but still). Will you get rude people? Yes. However, do not judge all reps working at
a customer service call center as being rude. Those who are should nto be working there, but it does not apply to all

Forget Discover if you use payment services (Quicken/CheckFree/Money)
08/27/2002
I have used Discover for the past 10 years and considered it a solid banking institution with reasonable service and some good benefits. I always used electronic payment services with them (CheckFree and Quicken). Recently it happened that the payment due date was on a Friday. The payment was processed by CF the day before and ACHed to Discover's account. It was not processed by Discover until Monday night. On Sunday I received an email with "late payment" notice. I was assesed late fee, finance charges and my 0% on balance transfers was gone. Calling Discover on Monday I received contradicting statements: first rep admitted that the electronic payments are not being processed over the weekend because they are "outsourced". Second rep denied that but said that electronic payments using THEIR service on the web are processed instantenously - third party take 2 to 5 days and it is my responsibility to account for that?! Didn't he just redefined the "due date"? Yet another rep, very rudely I must say, agreed finally to remove late fees, finance charges and reinstate the promotional interest. Was it worth the stress and time? No, it wasn't. I'm closing my Discover account. My peace of mind is more important to me than benefits provided by Discover.

A month went by and I didn't hear anything, and of course during this period I am paying a high rate of interest on my other card. Finally they send me a letter saying that I was disapproved as I didn't make enough money. I questioned them as to how they came up with that as I thought that $40,000 was sufficient. They said that my app only showed $8000 so I had to explain to them how to read their application as there was one line for salary and another for social security. So they told me that they would resubmit. Another month went by and I got a phone call asking me how I had submitted my application and wanting me to verify all of my information. They said that I should hear from them in 7 to 10 business days. I finally got a letter with my card but no balance transfer and a limit of $2500. So I again called. They told me that they could not up the limit to cover my request for a balance transfer but they would not tell me why they had set such a low limit. I told them to cancel the account immediately, take my name and phone number off their list and never to contact me again. In the meantime I had applied online for another credit card (didn't think the Discover Card was ever coming) and got it approved immediately. The truth coming from someone that used to work there!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, all you people that have someting mean to say are lying.I used to work for Discover, before I moved to California. All you people are just telling your story but adding a little more extra.I want to start off with some of the first reviews I saw.If you make a payment on a Friday it is not going to post until Sunday. But if you do it with your online banking it takes a few days. Your bank will agree with you as well. When you sent payment up online it will tell you like a 3 day leeway. But your bank will show it the day yo made it because that was basically the transaction date. There is so grace period so that is why a late fee will be put on the next day.
The person that had a $1300.00 balance and says it went to $2,500.00 because of fees. The only fees you would get would be Late fees normally $29.00 (which most credit cards are) Which is once a month, for your balance to get that high you would have to have not paid for a long time.
The one that says interest rate went to 24.99% that is sooo not true,They dont have apr's that high, not eve fr c/a which are the highest. If yours did go up that is because bad payment history. If you cant get a lower apr is becaues you are not eligible because of poor payment history and the information on your credit report.
If you need to dispute a charge, we can do it. Thats why there is a dispute department. If the reps are rude to you, that means you have to be REALLY rude to them, not about the company, but to the reps personally.
They also CANNOT put a persons name as a joint cardmember, where they are responsible as well, unless they have the signature. There is a form they send out for a joint cardmember.Maybe if somebody's wife got it without them knowing, that cold be possibl. But they can show proof.

LATE FEE SCAM OR POOR COMPUTER SYSTEMS??
05/06/2002
Would be interested to know if this is a wide spread problem or not.
I pay all my credit card bills using the United State Postal service E=pay system. In the past year Discover does not post any Friday transactions until the following week and then changes you the late fee. If you make a fuss they will give you a credit but then change you interest that you have to fight to get removed. After the latest problem I finally cancelled the card.
For example I had a $12.08 bill due on May 4th (a Saturday) I set the bill up for payment on May 3rd. The funds were withdrawn from by bank by Discover on May 3rd but not posted to my account. They posted the late fee on May 5th. Since I never carry over credit card balances I always pay when due and this is never a problem for other cards. Citcorp, Am Exp ...etc. Is this a scam or are they just inept.

I was young, dumb, and made some mistakes as far as paying. When I went over the credit line, there were overlimit fees and high interest on top of that. My $1300 credit line turned into a $2500 balance with all of the fees. Before it even got that far, I tried to get them to help. I tried to get them to increase to line to that amount so that I could pay it down easier. They absoulutely would not. I transferred the balance a few years ago and have paid it off since. I am totally dissatisfied with this card company because of being given incorrect information by various service reps when trying to dispute a charge for defective merchandise. I started trying to put the charge in dispute in May 200l. It was August 2001 before they attempted to investigate, and by then the merchant had gone out of business and no longer had an account at the bank the merchant used at the time I first tried to put the amount in dispute. From May until now Discover has added $29 late fees each month to the original amount. I sent certified mail twice and wrote to the company's CEO, but rec'd no reply from the CEO or his office.

READ THIS!! You will never believe how bad Discover is at customer service and at resolving disputes. Their customer service individuals are not given the power to help cardholders and thus, even if you find a rare one wanting to help, good luck. Second, if you are ever faced with a need to dispute a fraudulent charge to your credit card OR a charge whereby the merchant did not provide what was promised, you might as well take out your wallet and PAY UP because Discover will NOT help. They will immediately side with the merchant and without doing a reasonable investigation, they will send their ATTORNEYS to collect the debt. My opinion is these are BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD people running an EVEN WORSE credit card company. If you have a Discover card, RIP IT UP. If you don't, count your blessings and NEVER EVER get one!

I use this card all the time. Everytime we use the card we get up to 1 % cash back. At the end of the year we get over $150 back. It's great to get a card to pay us for using it. We pay the balance off each month so we don't pay finance charges. It is a free card so there are no charges there either. We use it for buying everything (gas, grocery, paying bills automaticly debiting the card). A few years ago, my husband decided to take more control of our credit cards. We had seen a television program that recommended calling your creditors, if you had a good credit rating, and negotiating a reduction in your interest rate. We had several cards and, of those cards, only 2 (Discover and one other) refused to reduce our APR based on our credit history (which was/is good). Consequently, we cancelled the DISCOVER card. It's our opinion that loyalty and a good credit history should have some reward since current card holders don't get the "perks" offered to new applicants.

The Discover Rip-Off
02/11/2002
My mother was issued a Discover card in 1987. I was issued a card on her account, but was NOT a joint account holder. When she died of lung cancer in 1997, I attempted to pay her account up-to-date. Discover knew she had passed, and I was going to get the account up-to-date because this was the only credit card I had at this time. I understood them to inform me that I could keep the account under her name until I paid it up-to-date, then I could take over the account. In July 1997, they refused to activate my new card, because the account was behind, even though I was making monthly payments on the account to catch it up -my mother used the card over the past several months before her passing for medicine and food while she was out on sick leave, using what little money she received from her sick leave to pay her essential bills. With all this understood, Discover has since not only denied my new card, but has placed this on MY credit report, because after several months of trying to find out what they wanted, when I was not even an account holder!!! Credit Shoppers beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure they understand the difference between an account holder and an account user!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ever since Discover revised its cashback program (starting next year, yes, but it exists) to say that you couldn't get the cashback amount until after you'd accumulated $20 worth (you'd need to spend a LOT of money to do that), the card just lost all interest to me.
Discover's customer service is great; it is also the only one that lets you put temporary freezes on your card if you think, but aren't sure, that you lost the card (buys you time). While it's not accepted everywhere, it's accepted in almost all the major outlets, so it's not too big of a problem. Also, Discover is very generous with its initial credit lines, which I like a lot. I am very miffed whenever I get offered less than $2000, even though I almost never use more than $500 worth a month.
However, with the new program rules, Discover has gone from having something unique to just a standard fare card with exceptional customer service. If you're into rewards (like me), this is not the card for you anymore.
It was really too bad. Discover was one of the cards I really liked.

I recommend the Discover Card to any college student or lower income couple/person. A benefits that I like from Discover Card is that I can pay my bill at a Sears store. I find this to be very convenient because we all go to the mall at least once a month. Another benefit that I like was at times I would have a $0.00 minimum payment. So if I happen to forget to pay that month it didn't matter. Plus I never had problems with customer service. If you did get a late fee usually they will take it off if you explain the situation. The last benefit that I enjoy from Discover Card is the cashback bonus. Now if you don't pay your bill off every month, this benefit is not so good but if you pay your bill off then that is extra cash in your pocket.

Discover - the card that gives back!!
01/28/2002
My family (all 4 of us), all use the Discover card because of its exceptional cash back promotion. Although they used to give 2% back, the 1% back is just as good as any others out there. The best part about this cash back program, unlike most others, is that you get 1% cash back on everything you buy; not just on the balance that you carry over from month to month. This allows me to pay off my bill from month to month, not get tons of interest tacked onto my bill, and yet still get 1% back on everything I spend. Who can argue with that?
My dad has also had experience with the customer service aspect of Discover. He has lost his wallet, not once, but twice so far, and we have had the pleasure of having to cancel the card and requesting new ones. However, both times, the customer service was very friendly, not mention punctual.
I would highly recommend the Discover card to anyone who needs a good credit card. People always ask me if Discover is accepted everywhere, and the answer is yes. This is a great card to have.

I am very displeased with Discover Cards. They get you to transfer balances by offering a low interest rate. Then they raise it to the highest interest they can. I understand that the introductory rate was just to get you to sign up, but don't recall them saying after the initial rate is over they will raise it to the highest that is available. I missed no payments, all were on time. On top of this, they sent me a notice saying they were lowering my credit limit, because I had too many credit cards. Well, I do have several cards, but not all of them have balances. And, I'm certainly not behind or unable to make the payments. Why should they care how many I have as long as they get their money along with the very high interest. Am transferring all balance to another card, and not dealing with Discover again.

My husband and I have had our Discover account for over 7 years, and use it constantly. We like the cash-back feature. It's best to pay this card off every month. But be careful, one time we were off by 1 cent when we paid the bill, and the next bill charged us mega-interest. They said if you always pay off your balance and miss one month, they'll go by two months purchases to charge you interest. It's all in the fine print. However, customer service was very nice and corrected the situation for me when I balked at all that interest for only being 1 penny late.

I phone Discover Card to find out that they had pulled my credit report and determined that my other credit card balances were too high, in relation to the number of cards I have. Well, I was shocked, nothing had changed from the time I applied for the Discover Card up until I recieved this news....The balances actually were lower than when I applied months ago, for a discover card, they new then what cards and balances I carried when they approved the me orginially, so don't get fool by Discover's low transfer rate, If you do apply after the introductory interest rate ends, just check what interest you are being charged thereafter..Discover has plans to had set the consumer -----Just Beware.....

I've had my Discover Card for over 18 months now and it was my first real credit card. I had a secured card before that. Discover was the first to give me a chance with 'real' credit. They gave me a great credit limit (I thought they screwed up at first!) and a good interest rate. I've had only good experiences with their customer service as well, they are great. I have been very happy in the two occasions that I have disputed charges to my account. They have great procedures and policies.
I also got an automatic credit limit increase, which has been great. And, since Interest rates have been dropping I called in and got my card adjusted to their current rate (13.99 fixed!). None of my other cards let me do that (NextCard, GetSmart or CapitalOne).
A great bonus is their 1% cashback award! They have great online account access as well.
The only drawbacks are on two occasions my card has been disabled due to fraud protection measures - because of some online purchases I made. However, they were quick to reactivate the card... and I respect why they do this. You can also only make one online payment every week. Rarely this is an issue, but once it cost me some interest on my account. Discover is as accepted as widely as Visa and MasterCard, but most places take it. Get one at least one Discover Card and a Visa or MasterCard and you'll be set! I am.

Discover was one of the first credit cards I obtained, and it remains my card of choice. Since most of my credit card purchases are online, I wanted a card that would allow me to view the details of my transactions, both past and present. I am comfortable using their online service and have also opted for email notification of my new statement and when they receive my payment. They also offer the opportunity to pay online, but I'm still not that trusting of the internet to select that option.
Whenever I have had a question regarding my statement, I have found their customer service to be the absolute best, and instead of having to fight my way through a maze of automated messages, I have actually been able to speak to a "real" person very quickly.
The Cashback Bonus Award is an incentive, but it really hasn't added up to much. Still, it's a nice option (although not the reason I prefer to use the card). Right now Discover Card is making a donation to America's relief efforts (Sept 11) by making a donation (until they reach their goal of $5 million) every time Discover Card is used. This, to me, is more important than the Cashback Bonus or most other promotional offers!
Due to the ability to keep track of my statements and the wonderful customer service, Discover Card will continue to be my credit card of choice.

I've used the Discover Card for 15 years now, and I use it in preference to my VISA whenever possible. The cash back starts at .25% and increases to 1% of all purchases. We can even get cash back on groceries, now! Prescriptions, too, although many medical expenses won't qualify because they only take VISA or Mastercard. My monthly VISA bill doesn't have too much on it nowadays. (And yes, it is a negative to have to carry two cards like this.)
In April 2000 I was way off on my tax estimates, and found myself having to put my federal income tax (over $3,000) on a credit card. Sure, I had to pay a fee (which I didn't like), but Discover gave me the cash rebate, so that helped a lot. If I recall correctly, you can also pay taxes with Mastercard, but not with VISA.
I've seen other cards that pay back more, but usually you have to buy certain things to qualify. Generally, it's not a good idea to be restricted like that. Some others pay more, but to get to that level require spending more than I spend, so I've never seen enough additional benefits to switch. So far, that is.
And I love being able to go to the Internet and see all my charges, right up to date. Current and past statements too. My VISA card doesn't have this capability.

I have been a Discover Card holder for
many years. I was intrigued by the cash
back option, but disappointed at the
limited places that took the card. Over
the years I have found that more and
more places are taking the card. Though
I still have a Visa card, I find myself
using the Discover card almost exclusi-
vely. The cash back at the end of the
year is a nice bonus. I particularly
like using the card for gas fill ups.
It is convenient and I know I am getting
a little something back for something I
have to pay for anyway.
I have never had a problem with a
payment being lost or not applied to my
account. The time to pay is sometimes
a little short and I get a little
aggravated that the payment date is
usually just after the first of the
month since I like to pay my bills at
the first of the month. Otherwise I
have no complaints about the card.

Discover:
So far, my experience with this credit card company has been very satisfactory. I am taking advantage of their balance transfer program to lower the interest payments on some other cards (my husband was late a time or 2, not realizing how much that was costing us). The offer was 4 months with 0 interest, then 14 percent after that, giving me a much easier payoff time, (actually a doable one)! The customer service from day one has been wonderful. I LIKE getting credited with intelligence, as well as treated with respect.
Take advantage of this card, it has saved me a huge amount of money in interest.

The Discover Card was the first credit card my husband and I ever owned. I remember thinking that it was scary to be responsible for a credit card, not to dig a deep hole of debt. But it was a good card for us. The interest rate is pretty reasonable, actually better than most. The Cash-Back Award makes it better than most because you get money back on each purchase. There is no annual fee for using this card and you have 100% fraud protection. The introductory rate is 1.9% which is pretty good and it offers other services a a low reasonable rate. Now you can even pay your bills on-line or get cash through your Discover Card! You should check it out for yourself!

Cancellation of my credit card.
08/24/2001
I had been a cardholder with Discover Card for a number of years. My first complaint came when they continued to increase my interest rate, when I had made a few late payments. My balance was too high for me to be able to pay it off, and due to the late payments, no other credit card company would extend me credit. I think at this point I was close to a 17 percent interest rate.
About a year later, I lost my wallet, and didn'e realize it until late in the evening. I immediately called customer service, and told them of the situation. It was a Friday evening, and the customer credit representative said that she could not cancel the card until Monday morning. I asked what would happen if someone were to use my card in the meantime, and she stated that I would be liable for fraudulent charges, until I submitted a dispute charge. I then asked if she couldn't just immediately put a hold on the card, and not allow any more charges to go through, and she said that she could not until Monday morning. I cancelled my account at that time, apparently not effective until MONDAY MORNING!!
Most Attractive Feature: The initial interest rate.
Least Attractive Feature: They raise your interest rate if you are late on a few payments.

This is a really good credit card, especially for people that carry balances. Customer service is excellent, they really help, at least for me they did. Sometimes they call me themselves and offer ridiculously low rates for balance transfers. The only bad thing about this card is their cash back program. It's 1%, its not even funny! Plus there is also a limit to that! So cash back shouldnt be a reason to get this card but otherwise its a good card.

As a student, I'm one in a million because I have the ability to pay off my monthly bill to keep it at zero. To Discover Card, this makes no difference in their customer services towards me. I've had to dispute many charges while in college simply because vendors take the opportunity of a number and expiration date and add false charges. Discover Card does not seem to understand nor cares about this. It is literally hell going through an alleged "investigation" with them. And of course the worst part is that they do not keep you updated about what is going on in the "investigation." They will simply tell you over the phone, "we'll check it out for you. Anything else?" and you'll recieve 2 letters in the mail. The first states that the "investigation" is pending and the second one you will recieve 2 weeks later saying that your temporary credit has been reversed.

I received a Discover card a couple of years ago while still attending college. When i first started using the card in 1999 the intrest rate was 17.99 now after having the card for over 2 years the intrest rate is 19.99 percent for purchases and 23 percent for cash advances. Recentley, i sent a $1,400 dollar payment to Discover and they applied all of my payment to purchases. This left me with a $800 cash advance balance which they are charging a 23 percent intrest rate. With my other cards Citibank, Fleet etc... they applied more money to the cash advances instead of the purchases. Also, when I called to dispute a $55 charge on my bill their customer service reps were rude and abrasive. I had to speak to three different people over a 2 hour period to get them to dispute the charge.
In closing Discover card is a card to stay away from.

I have this card over 3 years and I absolutely love it. I pay my balance each month so I don’t pay much attention to the finance charge. The real benefit of this card is the Cash Back option. We charge almost everything we buy and received a “cash-back bonus” check of over $300 dollars. That’s a real bonus. I am able to view my statement online, which makes it very easy to check on what you’ve charged. Also, they have the option to have the payment automatically deducted from your account each month on the due date, so no worrying about the payment getting there on time. This is a great card.

I never asked them for a second one because I barely use the Discover card that I have to begin with. Why would I need the second one? I think that the Discover Card is a great credit card to have if you pay off your balance every month. I charge everything I can on it, including gas, groceries, and restaurant meals. Even the small amounts add up and I get a nice check back once a year from them. Their customer service is very good too. My December payment did not arrive by the due date, even though I mailed it in plenty of time. I called and they immediately removed the late charge and interest charges, and they were very friendly about it. However, they do have a higher interest rate than many other credit cards. So I make sure that I only charge what I know I can pay off each month, as running a balance would more than cancel out the cash back bonus with interest charges. But as long as it is paid off each month, I think that the Discover Card is a great deal!

I was attracted to the cash back reward. However, other companies have recently developed their own reward cards with better rebates. Though I don't have it, a friend tells me American Express has an excellent one.
I have held this card for 3 years. My APR has been continuously raised from 16% to a current 19.99%, regardless of the fact that I pay on time and have never gone over my limit. This seems an attempt to make more money from customers without justification.
Discover is still not accepted everywhere as are Visa and MC; though I have only been inconvenienced by this a handful of times. Check into its acceptance at the places you shop frequently before applying. Not a card to rely on if you travel.

Now as to the CyberRebate situation, these people tried to get something for nothing from an OBVIOUSLY shady website. 'Shady' as in business model, not fraud, which most credit cards protect against. Discover, along with MOST other credit cards, are refusing to refund their money on the contention that only a moron would pay 10X the value for a product on the promise of a 'free after rebate' deal. In this day when we are using less cash than ever percentagewise in our spending, you need to do business with a credit card on which you can heavily depend. Discover Card is not it. I spend easily over $20,000/year on credit cards. That would mean I would get over $400/year back from Discover. It's not worth it, when Discover flatly refuses to hear my very valid dispute against a company who failed to complete their terms of a purchase, a $7,500 purchase. Like a good insurance company, like a good bank, like a good broker or a realtor, find a credit card company that will stand by you when you truly need them, not just when they are ringing up commissions and interest.

I get 1-2 phone calls a day from them each and every day. Every time I tell them to take me off their calling list, every time they tell me they'll do it. One time they called me and I as always told them to take off their list, stop calling me, etc. The guy on the phone says OK, he is very polite, I hang up. I have had my Discover card for about two years now and I have not had any problems with it. In fact, I enjoy having it handy.
I went on vacation last year and through the website Shop Center I was able to get a wonderful rate on a SUV. I have used the shop center discounts several times since then and have not had one problem in receiving the discounts. The cash back reward was never a big attraction for me and if a 1% cashback offer is a big attraction then you probably need a reality check.
I pay more than the minimum monthly amount which may be why I have not had problems with this card(I really don't know for sure). The online payment method is wonderful and the option to receive an e-mail statement is also excellent. I just wish they gave you the option of either a paper or e-mail.
I have received some telemarketing calls, but once I tell them I am not intersted I don't hear from them again. (I have only had three calls).
The only drawback is that they are not as popular as VISA or MasterCard and are not taken at as many places as the aforementioned cards.

I always wanted a card that gave cash back, and Discover Card was the only one I knew of that did, so I got one in college. Well, I was disappointed to find that it not only had a max. of 1%, but that it took a few thousand dollars before one could reach that amount. The cash back bonus starts off at .25%! Nonetheless, I enjoy the feature because it's still more than what any other credit card I've had gives. Even though the bonus % is low, they also give an additonal cash back % if you shop through their website which is the part I like the best! For example, they'll give you 15% off any purchase at CDNOW or 7% off at Barnes&Noble and many, many more! That feature makes the card worth it. I also love the fact that you can pay your Discover bill online with your checking account, and they post it that day or the next; so you can pay up until the day it's due, and you still don't receive a late charge. Every other card I've tried to pay online makes you wait anywhere between 5 and 10 days before they post your payment, so it's not even worth doing. You're better off mailing the check which usually takes only 3 to 5 days. Finally, I once had a wrong charge on my card from a company who insisted I didn't cancel their trial subscription on time when I had. After getting no help from their representative who wouldn't let me talk to a manager, I called Discover, and they called the company and got them to credit the charge back to me! Discover isn't the greatest card ever, especially since not everyone accepts it, but I've been pretty pleased with it, and I'd recommend it for those who shop online or who want to pay their bill online to avoid late fees.

Discover was my very first credit card. I got it while in college and it really came in handy.
The limit they gave me was higher than what my friends were getting so I could keep all my charges
to only one card. Further, they allowed you to skip payments if you paid more than the minimum
due. This was great because, as a student, you could give them a large payment when you got your
financial aid and then have time to work on the next payment.
My problem started when they informed me I had been randomly selected for my rates to increase.
Not because I was a bad customer--they just selected me at random. I tried to negotiate a lower rate
for 18 months and then i just closed the account. I'd carried the card for so long I was scared to be
without it and they may have picked this up in my conversation but they were stiff in their decision
not to lower my rate. When i closed the account I was paying a higher rate than when I was issued the
card as a student. I'll miss their customer service but 18.9 is too much to pay when you have excellent
credit and can go elsewhere.
I guess the thing that always baffled me about the situation is that they raised my limit by about
3000 every year but refused to lower the rate. Go figure.

After, when I cut the card up and returned it, they never even acknowleged it.

Discover Card ----.Good, but Bad if you have a crisis

I was a Discover member in good standing, and with a low interest rate. But, then I had a really bad crisis, but they didn't seem to care. It was not my fault---a relative handled my affairs and didn't know about this account. Anyway, they set up a payment plan, eventually---and every month I have to call a certain person that I'm making the payment on a certain day....and he then takes off the $29 fee off each. Then one lady told that I qualified for a lower interest rate---only slightly lower than what I was paying! Why didn't they tell me this before? And, of course, they wouldn't take off alot of the back fees that I had no control over! I say that you're a good customer, until something happens that is beyond your control! Then they really jack up your interest rates really high! And most of your monthly payment of $140 plus goes towards interest! I wouldn't advise any one to apply for this card, unless they get the lowest interest rate offered, and only use the card minimal...and pay it off as soon as possible! This is if this is the only credit card that will approve you for a credit card and you need one for emergency or such! They are most greedy and heartless!

Fixed interest rate scam
02/28/2001
When I first got my Discover card, they gave me a low fixed interest rate that I was very pleased with. When I originally agreed to the card over the phone (my first mistake), I was reassured by the salesperson that they didn't routinely increase interest rates. Within 6 months of having the card, I received a letter stating that during "a routine review of cardholder credit reports," I was selected for a interest rate increase (of nearly 5%!). I had transferred another card balance to this card, so yes, my balance was high, but when I got the card, I was encouraged to transfer balances. However, I had never missed a payment or been late. I called the company, and they essentially told me that was too bad and there was nothing they could do for me. I promptly closed the account and won't ever have one with them again. They called about two weeks ago trying to get me back - not a chance. Be very leery of anything their salespeople tell you! They will tell you boldfaced lies to get you hooked in.

When I got divorced 5 years ago, my ex was ordered by the judge to make the payments on this card. I had not make any charges onto that card after that point. He did not make any payments. About 2 years ago, Discover contacted me. I was treated HORRIBLY. Despite the fact that we had the card for over 18 years (and paid on it regularly for 15 years), they claimed that we got the card just to run up fraudulent charges. I realized that I was still responsible for the payments and we worked out a deal where $50 a month was automatically debited from my account. Last month, however, they decided to increase my payment. Without contacting me, they attempted to withdraw $100 from my account. I had NEVER authorized them to withdraw $100. The withdrawal was denied. Now, they are wanting the account paid up in full now. The representative and her manager were VERY rude to me.

I had their card for 6 yrs, and always paid my bill off in it's entirety as it arrived. My husband was in a dispute with another credit card, due to automatic withdrals to an insurance company that continued withdrawing, after we canceled the insurance. His credit on that particular card showed as non payment, as he was disputing it, and Discover decided to cancel me! I called and asked why, and they decided that I was a "risk", even though they never were paid late or slow! Now, 2 yrs later....almost every wk, they want me to come back! I have numerous other cards, and now I feel that THEY are the risk! Here one day, gone the next!

I PAID THE PAYMENT THE DAY I GOT THE STATEMENT AND FOR THE THIRD TIME THEY CASHED THE MONEY ORDER FOR AN AMOUNT LESS THEN WHAT THE MONEY ORDER WAS PURCHASED FOR AND THEN PUT A FREEZE ON THE ACCOUNT BECAUSE OF THEIR MISTAKE. I GOT ALL THE INFORMATION FOR THEM AND HAD TO DO ALL THE WORK TO CORRECT THEIR MISTAKE. ANOTHER INCIDENT WAS WHEN I PAID MY OCTOBER 28 PAYMENT ON THE 8TH OF OCTOBER AND CALLED THAT DAY AND ASKED IF I WERE 4 DAYS LATE ON THE NOVEMBER PAYMENT BECAUSE OF IMPENDING SURGERY IF IT WOYLD HURT MY CREDIT RATING SINCE I HAD NEVER BEEN LATE IN 14 YEARS. THE GIRAL PUT A FREEZE ON THE ACCOUNT AND IT TOOK ME 3 HOURS TO GET IT OFF. HOW CAN THEY FREEZE AN ACCOUNT WHEN IT IS THE 8TH OF OCTOBER AND THE NOVEMBER STATEMENT HAS NOT EVEN COME OUT YET. THIS WAS ALSO REPORTED TO THE CREDIT RATING EVEN THOUGH THEY SAID IT WOULD NOT BUT I CHECKED AND I HAD TO GET IT TAKEN OFF. Now that I do it will only make shopping more fun and easy and I don't have to worry about long lines during the christmas holiday because I can do all my shopping online. They give beginning creditees a generous credit limit that will be more then enough. After steady payments for a couple of months you will be considered for a higher credit line and that will make shopping even more fun and glamorous because you can go out or online and buy whatever your heart desires. So, take the plunge and apply for the Discover Card now and take the first step

What is the most maddening part is that the three credit bureaus read my letters to Discover telling them to get their heads out of their arse and correct their lie as the debt was paid off and each dumb bureau snds me new statements saying"we checked with your card company and they state that their information is correct. Discover the discover card
12/13/2000
Even though Discover card is not widely accepted it's a card that's a must for any credit card holder. It's a card that has its perks and benefits because each card can only be judged on how often a person uses it. The card is just like any other card without the fancy features like bonus miles. To me that takes away the value of the card because you only using it to get your free miles (depending on how much you spend). So what. That's not a big deal because a card should be used as the sole purpose as a credit card. Commericals for credit cards but to much emphasis on you have to this card because of yadda yadda yadda. I use any credit card and I don't notice any difference. A credit card is only worth as much as you charge on your credit card and when you get your bill you pay it in full. You don't have to judge a card based on the rewards you get from it. Just use it like your getting gas at the gas station. Don't flaunt it, just use it.

Do you think that I would have accepted the offer knowing it would put me over my limit and have a charge of 29.00 a month until I could lower the balance????? Now, I have to call every month the get it removed. I had only mad three purchases, FOR GAS (about 12.00) and I am unable to use it to this day!!!!!! Cash Advances
11/30/2000
If you make a cash advance on a Discover Card the only way you can pay that amount down
is to pay off the card or all of your purchases. Discover reserves the right to distribute your
payment however they please. Therefore any cash advances balances you have, which are at a higher
interest rate will not be reduced until the purchase balances are paid. Even if you send
in an extra payment requesting that amount to be applied to your outstanding cash advance,
Discover will not honor the request (that is what a customer rep just told me).

Competitive interest rates
11/29/2000
Overall, Discover has been a good card to have. Then only trouble I've personally encountered was when their interest rates creep up. It's very subtle, but I believe this year alone I went from 12.99% to now 17.49%. They review the account only at your request. Sometimes I find that I have to insist on a very specific reason for the increase. Discover Customer Servive Representatives will start with a "textbook answer", thats when you have to request a supervisor or manager on duty. They usually give you the same answer only worded slightly different. I will say the entire time they remain very friendly. In the end, you feel that they have listened to any problems that may be occuring with your account and they take steps to help you resolve your problem. I don't think I've ever hung up with a Discover representative disgusted with their service. Their phone etiquette is a major factor in remaining a customer. I would and have recommended this card to other people. In fact, I had my parents do a balance transfer from two other credit cards to a Platinum Discover Card. They've been happy with their card as well.

One day I found that my discover card was not working and

a stop on the account. Well I swore up and down that
I had sent them a check, I had written it down and I was
missing the stub to the bill. So they took off the finance charges and credited my accound for about two months and then finally sent me a bill including the
missing amount. I figure that was fair, considering
that I could have been lieing to them and they had not
gotten their money yet. So just the other day (a few
months later) I was cleaning up my desk at work and
I found the bill all done up and ready to be mailed.
So I feel kinda silly and lucky about the whole thing.

DON'T DEAL WITH DISCOVER!!
05/27/2000
When I applied for a Discover Card in 1991, I was told by their Manager of Credit I had one of the best credit scores in the country. He said "You are in the top 1%." I was granted the highest credit limit Discover offered.
My card was stolen in early 1994 and I received a replacement card. Almost a year later the trouble surfaced. I received my regular bill which should have included only recent purchases since I paid my bill in full each month. However, this bill contained a "transfer fee" of almost $8,000. I called Customer Service and asked what this fee was. I was told they would "check into it." I wrote and never received a response either by phone or letter.
Over a period of 90 days I called, mailed letters, faxed, wired and even sent federal express letters, progressively working my way up to the CEO and President. I never received a response until finally I got a letter almost 100 days later. It contained 13 pages of ADMITTED DISCOVER ERRORS -one entry after another. They said over a period of 1 1/2 years they had made dozens of mistakes on my account and now I owed $8,000.
Unfortunately the 13 pages still contained dozens of errors but they refused to acknowledge them. For instance, there were 24 charges relating to only 3 computer purchases for my business but which had all been RETURNED. I sent proof of the returns but my account was bounced back and forth to over a dozen people from 1994-1995 while I attempted to resolve the dispute. Each new person said there was no evidence of my prior communications and I had to start all over again! No one at Discover would produce copies of receipts documenting the alleged purchases which supported the $8,000 claim. They said that "the Discover monthly statements were sufficient proof". Hmmm, does that mean the old Discover statements they admitted were wrong or the new ones?
They also put in excessive late charges and penalties. When they tried to persuade me to pay the $8,000 they admitted some of the late charges were "errors" and "duplicates" and they removed them. However, when it was clear I would not pay for the returned computers 24 times, they put back all the late charges.
Discover never made any effort whatsoever to collect the "debt" but they marred my credit file with a "profit and loss write off" - the worst rating a credit card company can report. The derogatory entry never stopped me from getting credit elsewhere, though, because I simply showed proof of Discover's manifest negligence. Today my credit remains flawless with the sole exception of Discover Card.
I know three other individuals who had similar experiences with Discover's multiple mistakes. Each met with the same hard-ball resistance in attempting to deal with Discover's bungling credit department.
Bottom Line- Watch Out!
If you value your credit profile, DON'T DEAL WITH DISCOVER!!

I had a Discover card for about two years . I was very happy with them in general . I had always carried some kind of balance on this card , so when it was at its peak I decided to save some money and transfer the balance to a new card with an extremely low finance rate for the first 6 months and then a permanent rate that was still lower then my Discover . Well because there was no longer a balance or any activity on the account they canceled it . They gave me some excuse that they periodically check their member's credit report's and because I had so many new accounts opened recently they were cancelling my account . Now what gets me is they never had a problem with me paying my bills on time and paying their finance charges , but they had a problem with me carrying a 0 balance account .

Discover Card encourages debt…
03/27/2000
If you make at least the minimum payment on time, the minimum payment for the next 3 months will be $0 (zero). This, along with their higher than average interest rate, encourages people to incur more debt.
They don't specifically tell you that interest on your total monthly balance is still calculated, so unless you're looking for it, you might end up thinking you have a 90 day grace period, which is false.

Discover card & varying rates
03/27/2000
I like using a Discover cards. It is now, finally, widely accepted at different merchants. The card offers a cashback bonus on your purchases that can even be donated to a charity at the end of the year if desired. However, I find it frustrating that they give you different percentage rates on different transactions. Such as...purchase - 12%, cash - 15%, balance transfer 17%. I called customer service to see if I could pay them off in the order I chose (highest to lowest of course.) Customer service was very unhelpful stating that I could not & that a computer decided where my payments went on my bill. Not even a supervisor could answer me, he said it was arbitrary as to where my payments went. If you can get a low rate on this card, I would suggest you use it, but for only one type of transaction.

Review of Discover Card

I have been a Discover cardholder for nearly fifteen years and would highly recommend it. When I first received my card I did not use it very often because it was not widely accepted--it was still the 'new kid on the block.' That has changed, though, as Discover is now accepted almost everywhere Visa and MC are accepted. The bonus, for me anyway, is that I get cash back. This is a real incentive to use the card more often. I use my Discover Card to make nearly all my purchases, but I deduct the amount paid from my checkbook on each occasion, as if I was paying cash. At the end of the month, I total them and send a check to Discover. By doing this throughout the year, I usually end up getting a good cashback check from Discover. They pay me to use their card!

Discover is the one and only card I actually prefer to use. If I ever have a problem say with a due date my payday was moved and I felt I couldn't apply payment on time because of this I called and they were polite and understanding and moved the date just like that. Anytime I deal with them they are wonderful. Because I am timely the instantly with no "catches" gave me a reduced interest rate. Now US Bank I closed all those accounts because they were rude! And kept sending me "non payment" notices. It was costing me more to get canceled checks from my bank to prove I paid then the payment itself. Happened 7 months in a row. So I canceled them all from US bank! I only use Discover now.
