"They raise your interest rates"
We have had a Discover card for over 15 years. recently we noticed the interest rate was 28.99%. We called and were told that because we had gotten other new credit cards that our Discover rate went up. We had not had a late payment in over two years. On our statement it showed we had a balance of $6200, the minimum payment due was $140 of which $126 was finance charges. WOW! If we never used the Discover card again and sent the minimum payment I dont think we would ever pay this card off. The Discover rep basically said too bad, that's your new rate. We would be better off borrowing money from a loan shark! Eight days later we paid off the account and closed it. I will NEVER use a Discover Card again.

"Discover another credit card company"
Discover refused my request to take a charge off of my card, even though the merchant never delivered what I had ordered. The "customer service" guy offered no help at all. I got the impression that his job is to make you hang up the phone. He would would not process my dispute and just kept talking in a patronizing tone. You are far better off disputing a charge with with a trusted local bank. The sad fact is that their 1-800 customer service people talk off of a script and are only there to delay or deny you from talking to someone at the company with a brain, who apparently have no interest in talking to you anyhow. Credit cards work fine until someone tries to screw you over, and then the only thing that matters is how responsive and responsible the credit card company is. Get your credit card elsewhere, because Discover isn't the company that's going to help you.

"Discover is misleading"
I received a Discover Card invitation in the mail for pre-approval. The letter stated that I have been making such good progress in re-establishing my credit. I wondered how they knew this information about me and thought that it would be a great idea to transfer my low secured cards to an account with a higher credit limit. However, I called to ensure that my application had been received by the Discover processing center and the representative stated that I was declined. The invitation is very misleading. For the record, 4 years ago, I fell hard on my luck and fell into financial hardship with my credit cards. I am currently debt free, I make over $40,000 a year, and I have never paid late on all current credit cards. Credit card companies should not send invitations to consumers that "seem" to guarantee you for a card and then turn around and "smack you in the neck" with a decline to approval.

"A bad two years"
I had a discover card for 4 years and only 2 of them were good. For the first 2 years I didn't get any telemarketing calls or any suspicious fees. I didn't even have a problem with my payments posting to the account. Then all of a sudden I got a phone call about a Profile Protection Plan. They sent me a packet to read and if I was interested I had to sign it and send it back. Well, I wasn't interested so I shredded it and forgot about it. When I got billed for it I called the customer service rep. He said that by not sending the papers back I was stating that I was interested. That wasn't the only fee on my statement. I have subscriptions to 3 magazines. You would think that this has nothing to do with the Discover Card, but it does. They renewed my subscription ($180.00)without asking me first. I ordered those magazines with a different credit card I had at the time (which I no longer have). Why would Discover renew the subscription for me? I don't know, I was hoping someone could tell me since the customer service rep couldn't.

"Watch for tricky 0% interest offers with Discover Card!"
I have had the Discover Card for 10 years -- it was good, but simply was not accepted at as many places as other cards, so I wanted to simplify and cancel the card. When I called to do so, the customer service representative convinced me to take a 0% for "the life of the loan" cash advance which required only 2 actions on my part: make the minimum monthly payments and make a single purchase before my April 2004 billing date. I asked him if a $1.00 charge on April 2nd would fit this criteria. "Yes" was the answer since my billing date was on April 13th. "You could even charge $0.01, as long as it was before the billing date." Great! So I took a cash advance for $20,000 and made monthly payments, and made a $0.02 transaction on April 2nd. Wow -- everything was as promised. My automatic payments were set up to keep paying off the card, when I discovered in August that I had over $1000 in finance charges at 19.99%. Whooa! It turns out that I had to keep making at least 1 purchase per month every month after April! Clearly, I could have done this just as easily as in April, but I did not know -- the customer service rep did not tell me about this. It was in the fine print of the offer, but no appeal to Discover Card at this point made it possible to recover all of the finance charges. I paid of the remaining balance immediately, but was only able to recover $700 of the charges (which Discover Card had told me was all they could do -- that even that was generous on their part). I explained the situation, that I never carried a balance in the past except for this offer, and we agreed that I had been an excellent customer. I tried to close the account, but the customer service rep convinced me that I had a better chance getting back the rest of the money by remaining a customer and trying another appeal later. This does work -- they can only do one major refund per call or perhaps per billing period. Still, a very bad experience that makes me want to cancel the card and stay away from Discover Card.

"Get ready for a LONG relationship"
Discover was fine until I wanted to cancel the account. They shut off the card and sent me a letter telling me the for "my convenience", if I chose to use my card again, they would institute a credit check and re-open my account.

Well, it turns out that someone fraudently used my account for something and I got a nice letter from Discover thanking me for reconsidering my decision to cancel the account. I got a new card in the mail a few days later, welcoming me to Discover card and saying they look forward to a long relationship with me...

I called them back and told them to cancel my account but they said it was not possible because I had open charges pending on the account (fraudulent charges mind you!). They connected me to the fraud center and took my info. After much effort, I was able to block the charge and get my account closed.

A week later, I got a letter from Discover thanking me for notifying them of the fraud and that, "a new card will be issued to you shortly so you can continue to receive the benefits of Discover card". I had to make one more phone call to Discover to tell them I did not want them to actually open a new account when they closed the old one for fraud.

IT NEVER PAYS TO DISCOVER...

"Long history of good service"
I've had a Discover card for 12 years, and have had only dispute with them -- which they solved to my satisfaction with one short phone call. As long as you don't carry a balance, this card is a real money-saver --I've paid entire monthly balances with my cash back reward, and got a free hotel stay on other occassions.
I only recently started using their web site for payments, etc., but it's well-designed and easy to figure out where you need to go. Highly recommend the card -- but if you routinely carry a balance on your card, the interest rates are probably going to be an issue for you.

"F- "
Hate to say this folks but discover is not all they would like you to believe it is. I have other credits cards that are just so over the top, when it comes to services/benefits, that when compared to them, discover has to be the bottom of the barrel credit card.

"Can it get any worse!"
Want a discover? Dont! The rates are rediculous compared to others. I have had five credit cards, discover is the worst. My payment history is perfect. I know how some cards will jack your rates up if you have a poor payment history and I can understand that, but having a perfect payment record means nothing to them apparrantly. Secondly, (this is more for people that already have a discover card) how many times do you have to ask someone not to call you in regards to telemarketing? Its rediculous. When they call, they wont take no as an answer. You say no and you get signed up for crap anyway. Then you have to call customer service, who tells you they cant help you, and pass you along to someone else that try's to do what?! They try to get you to keep crap you dont want and didnt ask for in the first place, and then they try to get you to sign up for something else!! Anytime you call customer service listen to the pitches they give you. They're marketing is so intrusive, you cant simply take care of business without being harrassed for something thats gonna cost a lot of money. And speaking of customer service, what customer service? They dont know the meaning of it. They dont take the time to listen, they seem to want to pass you off to someone else, and as I said earlier, just seem more interested in selling you something than to take care of the customer (you and I). Lets talk about the cash back they like to claim is so good. Anyone take a look at the small print? You only get 1/4% on your first $1500, 1/2% up to $3000 and 1% over $3000. Seems they change the rules on this all the time. Going back through my records I find that they have lessened the amount from previous years. And to top it off they "say" they offer 2% on the cash back, but it ends up being thats only if you want a gift certificate instead of "cash". If you advertise cash back 2% isnt that supposed to mean "cash", not gift certificate?! Seems they change the rules on the gift certificates too! They catch you with the offer (the bait), then switch the terms of the offer w/o any notification. Isnt that called bait and switch and is illegal? There is no benefits to speak of for carrying their card. No travel benefits, etc. I feel like I could go on even more, but I get tired of the whole thing. Considering discover, check everything else out first..trust me. I know.
