wrongful ways
10/22/2011
I have gotten rid of both of my Elan cards. I had a 0% transferred balance on one of them and made a small purchase. They have a NO GRACE PERIOD on purchases so they started charging me interest from the posting date of the purchase. When I paid more than the minimum payment, which wiped out the PURCHASE BALANCE, they informed me I would still be paying the minimum interest charge of $2 per month unless I also paid off the entire transferred 0% balance. All of my credit scores are in the 800s so I don't need this crap.

Credit limit changed without informing customer
09/18/2010
My credit union sold their credit card business to Elan after the TJMax break-in so I got this card by default. I only have one credit card and I've been too busy to try and find another one. I got points from the card which I've used so I kept the card even though they had Sat/Sun and moving due dates. I paid my monthly balance in full every month, electronically too which lowers their costs, and phoned dutifully when going abroad. One would think I was an deal customer, but no. By happenstance I just discovered, one day before going on a business trip, that my credit limit had been reduced by half with the result that I had a tiny available credit. Elan did this credit limit reduction PRIOR to informing me. One can only assume they were hoping to garner over-credit-limit fees. Their Customer Service, an oxymoron if ever there was one, is robotic. ELAN IS SLIPPERY, what might be true today might change tomorrow, AND SNEAKY so if you are unfortunate enough to have this card read the very fine print in the notices Elan sends out with maddening regularity.

Very happy with card.
05/14/2007
I have had this card for over 10 years and it is the only active card I have besides my checking visa. I have never been miss billed or had a single problem with the product or company. I have never been charged a single fee over the normal interest finance charges. When I contact cutomer service they answer my questions promply and to my satisfaction. This is my only financial product not with Wells Fargo and the only reason I have not switched over is because I have had such a good experience here. Highly recommend the product.
Most Attractive Feature: Have had zero issues with card.

The worst
09/26/2006
The single worst thing to enter my financial life. Years ago I charged 1,400 on the card, made some payments missed a few in the first couple of months, I was young. After I missed 2 payments I stopped getting bills and statements in the mail. I called Elan to rectify and, they gave me an ammount to pay each month, telling me the card would be paid off in a few years. For 3 years I never missed a payment- they never sent any receipt or statements, nothing, despite the fact I made many attempts to get them to. Finally after a few years of payment I called to check on my balance- it was up to an excess of 3,000- no one would offer explanations. I was treated like a fool by customer service. When I asked for a full record of my account to be sent to me, they sent some other persons account info- their card number and personal financial records. They have called and discussed my account with unauthorized people- to date I have not recieved any statements from them, the ammount keeps raising. One would think that 3,000 paid regularly over the course of 2 years would have paid off a 1,400 debt- it made the debt much much higher- this could have all been avoided with monthly statements and helpful customer service reps- or reps who didn't lie. I have tried to contact them and was given several fradulant manager names, I sent a certified letter that they never responded to.

YOUR LIFE COULD BE DESTROYED BY THIS CREDIT CARD!
02/26/2006
Just to start out, I'd like to say that I am a person with a top notch credit rating and I'm a very responsible person. I just simply made some very wrong choices in my life. I originally opened up the Elan credit card to help out my fiance who was having financial trouble at the time. He was put as a "secondary" card holder and I was the primary. Well, needless to say this transaction ended our relationship. Within 30 days he spent his entire credit limit (which was $5,000) buying frivolous things. I immediately was so alarmed that I called the credit card company and asked that our card be closed. I was told that I had to pay the credit card off before the card could be closed. All I was able to do was to deactivate the cards we had been given, which I immediately did. I paid this card off because I knew that my ex-fiance would not make payments because he had no means to do so, and I had to protect my credit rating. After my breakup - I moved to another state to start life over and had planned on buying a home. Within a little over two months I paid off the balance and the account was then closed. Within days of the account being closed, my ex-fiance fradulently re-opened my account by filling out an application with fradulent information and with my signature which was forged. Within 15 days he wracked up about $6,000 (over the credit limit) with purchases from electronic stores & furniture stores. I immediately paid off this card by transferring the balance to another credit card - which I am still paying off. I also contacted the police department, who by their report determined it was fraud (this was based on a writing sample I had provided them.) I tried to contact the fraud department and left numerous messages and never got a response back. I tried speaking with a supervisor and got no help what so ever. I finally got through after sending a letter attaching my police reports. I received the most "nightmareish" call of my life. A nasty representative called asking me "what are you writing to us about!!!" She said they determined this was not fraud because my ex-fiance was a secondary card holder and that he had rights to open the account. I told the rep that this was a fraudent signature and I got absolutely no reply. The rep did say that also, my case had no credance to their company because the District Attoryney was not going to take this case (the reason the DA didn't take this case was because he transferred it to a different county within the state - he thought they had responsibility for charging him). I mentioned that this signature was fradulent and I got no response from the rep. My credit card was re-opened in 12/05. To this day - I have no assurance that he won't be able to re-open this account, and I live in constant fear. I will be contacting numerous Consumer Advocacy Agencies, the federal agencies that oversee the finance industries, credit bureaus, etc. I have given up on the idea of finding justice and getting this crime punished - this just won't happen because there is still not a high priority given on credit card fraud. The thing that should have happened, though, was I should have been protected by this Visa card. They had a responsbility to protect me. I also will be filing a complaint with Visa because I know that Visa has very high standards for protecting their clients against credit card fraud. If anyone knows of a wonderful attorney who would like to help me out with this - please e-mail me at lhillgp@yahoo.com I believe, but am not positive at this point in my research, that Elan has probably broken federal laws, state laws, and have broken Visa's terms and conditions for fraud protection. Thanks all for reading and God Bless!!!

If your payment is due on Saturday or Sunday and you mailed your payment a week ago then you will end up with a late fee. I was told by customer service that they process payments when they get to them. I am four states away from them and it takes them two weeks to post a payment. Any payment received by them gets posted on Monday. So if your payment is due Saturday and they get it on Saturday, you still get a late fee. The customer service reps could care less. I am dropping this card asap. Intrest rate higher than the other 3 cards we have.

Double Charge Overlimit Fees--No way to avoid
01/09/2006
My federal credit union just changed to Elan Visa. I used my card and with the holidays, I got very close to my credit limit. Once the finance charges were applied, I went over my credit limit by a few dollars and was charged $35. My fault and I'll accept. When I went on-line to view my account, I saw a second $35. overlimit fee. When I inquired about that, I was told that once an account goes over the limit, an overlimit fee is assessed. If that's not paid by the next billing cycle, another fee is assessed. My finance charges went on 12/27 and on 12/28 my next billing cycle started! My statement didn't show the second $35. so if I had only paid the minium and not known about the 2nd fee, next month I would have had 2 more!! I spoke with the credit union who told me they have had nothing but complaints from customers and the teller told me she was closing her account with them!! It is nearly impossible, if not completely impossible, NOT to incur 2 fees for the same error--double jeopardy is what they're getting away with--penalizing you twice for the same mistake. Will pay this card off asap, never recommend and sending complaint to Attorney General's office in State of NJ.

What is 20 years of loyalty worth?

A 5 day late payment in 7/04 moved the interest rate from 7.99% to 23.99% although the balance was paid in full.I was informed by cardmember services that a "review" to lower the rate would not be available till April/05.I stopped using the card after Oct /04 and finally closed the account Feb/05 when they continued to decline adjusting the rate till April/05. I had been a cardmember for 20 years. Elan sent a form letter telling me how they value my relationship and regret my decision. It is an insult, given how I was treated.

Dishonesty and Terrible service
12/06/2004
I cancelled my dial-up Internet service in 2003 and switched to DSL from another provider. However, the dial-up company kept billing Elan. I wrote Elan multiple times to appraise them of this problem, and cancelled the card after paying off the disputed balance.
However, Elan refused to cancel the card arguing that if anyone submits a bill to them, they'll pay it even if the cardholder disputes the billing.

Don't get this card. I just had a customer service rep tell " we process the payments when they to them" - I asked how long do the payments sit there before they get processed and she said, "we are a business, we process payments continuously but we can only process them as *we* get to them".
In other words not when they recieve them but when they get around to them. Lousy card, short customer service hours on limited weekday hours. Nasty reps.
Oh, my original call was because I got a Demand leter for a late payment (not) demanding exactly $.00. That is right a demand letter for ZERO dollars.

Can't believe anyone would recommend this card

I was a Security First Network customer that was transfered to this bank. My interest rate was increased and it takes them two to three weeks to credit my payments. I have had to call customer service every month for the past three months to have late fees reversed and I can say that only one rep was helpful, the others were downright nasty. I'm dumping this card as fast as I can.

The Bad, The Good, The Bad
03/10/2002
The bad news: Security First Network Bank sold their credit cards to Elan Financial Services. SFNB had an extremely low apr for both purchases and cash advances - 9.9% - and a 25 day grace period.
The good news: Elan Financial Services recently sent out replacement cards - Platinum Visas - and - in my case - upped my credit limit to $8,200. Also: they provide easy to use web access and free internet payment from your checking account - a service sfnb did not provide.
The bad news: Their apr on purchases is 2% higher at 11.9% (still not bad - but sfnb was lower) cash advances apr is the traditional 19.9% and the grace period is 20 days.
All in all - not bad for a platinum card - however there aren't any extraordinary benefits (such as Blue's membership rewards program from Amex and slightly lower apr).
Still - I'd say this one is a keeper due to the higher credit limits it seems to allocate and the free internet payment option.
Most Attractive Feature: high credit line, easy web access and free internet payment
Least Attractive Feature: higher apr than previous bank who sold the card to elan

I wasn't looking for another credit card but........
12/04/2001
I took this card originally because I was offered 4.9% for life of the loan on a cash advance check. I could use that check to pay off my other balances. I had never even heard of Elan before I got this offer. From what I understand, thay are a smaller company. They have excellent 24-hour customer service. Their reps are some of the friendliest that I had ever spoken with. They are very willing to assist you if you need them. Unlike most places if you make a payment over the phone you will pay through the nose. You can imagine my surprise to find that this is free with them. Even though I think the interest is a little high--14.99%, I realize that it could be much worse. the only other thing is that they do charge a $40 annual fee if you do not use the card at least once a year. Charge something and pay it off and the fee is waived. I really don't think that it is too hard for any of us to use our cards from time to time. Overall this is a really good card with all of the benifits that you'd expect to get with a platinum card. If you fly, they have cards with miles as well. If you get an offer from this company, I suggest that you give them a try. I am very happy and plan to keep my card.

I searched the Internet for a VISA platinum card and came across Firststar Bank. I called their toll free number and applied for their Platinum VISA. They gave me their best card (APR about 15%) with a $5,000 credit line. I made my first payment and has been posted promptly with no delay. I do recommend this card for people who have average to good credit history.
