WORST EVER CARD
09/08/2009
I owed a little over $100 on my card. They cancelled the card, I because of sad misfortunes, having a home fire and business fire, no insurance to cover, my bill now is over $800. They won't settle for the original amount owed. I get phone calls everyday, every half hour.

I paid my payment on line two days prior to the due date. I rec'd my next billing and they had charged me a late fee of $35.00 due to their error. It showed that they did not process my payment till 3 days later. I am not able to get hold of a live person, and I agree with other people, that we need to file a lawsuit against this company.

I called the company prior to paying off my credit card to verify amount to send.Upon receiving the answer I called the loan company that I borrowed the money to pay off my credit cards and they issued a chech to FCNB.3wks.after receiving payment I was sent a bill for $35.oo for a late fee. I immediately called and the lady I spoke with said she would credit the account and apologized. The following month I got abill for $70.00 + interest...again I called as well as followed up with a letter....angd this has gone on for 2 yrs. Grand total to date $349.00 and I am still not going to pay it...this is just wrong to do someone who in good faith paid what was owed to this company. I would NEVER recommend FCNB.

Like a lot of people, I was shocked when they canceled their credit card. I had a $1000 limit and had a blance of $450 when the card was canceled. I tried to call, but as usual it was the same story...you could not get a live body. Then a few months late, I got a call from a collection agency asking for $1500. I refused to pay any over the limit fee for a card that was canceled. I have received calls from about 3 different agencies to date. The latest was today and now I am up to $3,000plus. If anyone out there is filling a class action suit or know how to go about it, please let me know.

Over 9 years ago I tried to rent a car w/ cash & I couldn't. I was so embrassed. I had BAD CREDIT & couldn't even get a credit card. I was determine to change my credit rating that day. I applied for a secure FCNB card with only $200.00 deposit. After using the card for a little over a year correctly w/ all payments on time etc, FCNB turned my secured card into a regular card much to my pleasure! On top of that every 6 months they faithfully increased my credit limit & when they closed their accounts I was really upset since I been w/ them so long. I did receive offers for other cards & can honestly say I would have be happy to stay w/ FCNB but because of FCNB I had no trouble getting my new cards which I have now had for 2 years. If it wasn't for FCNB my credit score wouldn't be what it is today. Thank you FCNB, I am still "One Satisfied Customer".

FCNB screws people
02/26/2005
Before I purchased my house in 2000 I had a credit check done and found fraudulent charges on a FCNB card that was in my name. The account was closed and the debt was deemed fraudulent and the case was closed. However, now in 2005 I am getting calls froma company that bought FCNB saying I owe $350 for those exact fraudukent charges. I have since sold the house and infortunately did not keep any paperwork relating to this case. I can not get in touch with anyone who can find out why an account that was deemed fraudulent and closed was sold as an open account. My credit is shot from this and I am pissed. I WILL participate in a class action suit if someone can offer some help.

Run the Other Way!

I have been a major cardholder for quite some time, since 1993. I have always been on time with payments, except when I was charged late fees on checks already submitted but "couldn't be found." Nevertheless these checks were always found after the paydate. After not being able to contact FCNB or their "customer service," I received a letter with a new contact number explaining that payments need to be made online whenever possible. Accompanying that letter, I have just received a hike in my interest rate on a card I can no longer use. They told me that I would have to seek the help of a debt consolidation agency (theirs) to reduce my interest rate. I am still trying to get this solved. I don't have issues with my credit and have since moved on and transferred the balance to a better card. My advice...get them out of your life asap!

FCNB seems to have a reputation for doing the same thing to people. They add false late fees and then refuse to even reply to a dispute request. When you settle, they never clear your account. When you dispute, they never answer. And they mess up your credit for years to come.

back in 1998 i signed up for this card and received a $300 limit non secured. i then put $500 into a savings account in thier bank raising my limit to $800. i made all payments on time, then i was late on 1 payment and got socked with some type of fees amounting to around $130.i cut the card up and mailed it back to them. they should have taken my $500 i had in thier savings and credited it to my account, leaving me around a $300 to $350 balance.Remember this was 1999.In july of this year 2004 i got a summons to appear in court from a collection agency. this was the second collection agency that had purchased my balance from fcnb.when i appered in court they said i owed $1221.49 and i was send into a room to try to mediate payments. in the room the collection agencys lawyer said that i now owed $2400.48!!! i refused to pay anything and stated my case to the judge. on sept.23th i have to go back to court for a trial on this matter. i have tryed to reach fcnb to obtain a record of what happened to my $500 savings account and have found out they are no longer in biz.i am glad to see this site and read how other people were also ripped off. it will be interesting to see what the judge will do when i show him some of these letters that other people have written. i will try to update this after i go to court.

Withdrawal of credit card
08/25/2004
FCNB mysteriously withdrew all charge privileges from its customers more than a year ago. The consumers had two options: pay off the entire account or pay on the account until balance is paid (at same interest rate as before and with NO further purchases). The bank's reasoning: they have the right to do what they wish with their accounts.

She didn't understand the fees, costs, late charges, etc. Now, four years later, I find this on her credit report. She said she used it once! She is in debt for $2400.00 and doesn't understand why. late fees
04/30/2004
This c.c. is real quick with the late fees. You can most always depend on a late fee no matter how prompt your payment is. For me it's always one day past due date even though my pmt. was sent early like 7 days. In december last year my payment was lost completely in the mail.In January the pmt finally made it and since it was lost I stopped payment on the check and issued another by phone the same day they told me my payment was not received. My next bill was late fees plus insufficient fund fees because of the stopped payment, which was communicated through customer service I told them exactly what, when and where I was going to take care of this. I fought back and forth with customer service about the fees and all they would say was it is not our fault the mail didn't get to us. I told them I wasn't to blame either and due to the check date and postage date could we dissolve the fees and of course the answer was no. I had never been late before that time. I think they just post late to be able to get late fees. I absolutely hate this card and I closed the account.

We should be seeing them in a "class action law suit" soon. I had perfect credit for more than 20 years until I dealt with this company. I have never been late on a payment in my life. I paid this account off as soon as I was notified that this company went out of business with Spiegel. Then I began getting late notices. I sent certified letters, called and faxed them since May of 2003. Today January 19, 2004, I am still contacting them about crediting incorrect late fees. Than all hell broke out. i had them closed the account and I have been for the last two years been tring to pay the card off. They have put fraudantly charges on my account charging me over the balance fees constantly. When I make hugh payments they some how hit me with fees knocking down the payment. 12/29/2003
I am sure that other FCNB "credit products" are using the same tactics as they are on the no longer valid VISA cards they issued. They will skip a month's bill, hope you don't notice, and then bill you a $35.00 late fee on the next bill. My bill has not arrived again, and it's 11 days after the closing date! If I want to send in a payment anyway, I can't because the payment address does not appear anywhere on the bill stubs! There must be a LOT more people out there who are experiencing these problems, but they either haven't found this website or they don't have access to the Internet. Thankfully they are no longer in the credit card business. They closed my account this past year, as they said they were no longer going to be affiliated with Visa. I transfered the balance owed to a new credit card, minus $3.30. I expected to be credited at least $5.00 back on the unused portion of my annual fee as stated by my initial agreement. I called customer service, waited for 30 min. and all they had to say was it was not being refunded, it was not a refundable fee and i should read my initial agreement i signed. I read the agreement to her that stated under the condition in which the card was cancelled it was refundable, and still she would do nothing. I was told to dispute it in writing. I did that as well and never got a response from them. Now they say i owe over $300 on an account that was supposed to be frozen until the dispute is settled, and they illegally reported it to the credit agencies as over 90 days past due. They are true rip offs that think large companys can bully around the consumers. I wish them all misery for what they are doing to hard working people trying to build a good credit history.

I recevied my card after my bankruptcy at first the card seemed ok to help build the credit back up, but after i moved out of oregon to find a job the posting practices they had were unheard of, to take a pymt over the phone should post the next day not 5 days later a western union quick collect the same if not sooner took upto 8 days to post and would cause a overcharge and then a late fee and then an overlimit charge which they wouldn't credit me back on. I started out with a credit limit of $300 and boosted to $800 but they didn't inform me until i tried to use the card that they cancelled all service to everyones card. I am truly glad that they are out of business and hopefully the regulators who found they broke several servicing laws will not let them get by without fining them at a high price and make sure they ratings as a credit card company stays in the low digets. As for the idots that thought they were collectors they were rude, tried to make me feel stupid when in fact they were not the bright lite bulb there. There is no reason when a person gives a check over the phone that it shouldn't post the next day instead it took 5-7 days, by law they can't hold a ck or funds without posting for more than 3 days, and for a western union that is to post the same day it took just as long. Their bank was there to make money on late fees, overlimit fees, and anything else they choose to charge. Hopefully this will get a big write up in the paper and give them a big fine. I have been doing just fine without a credit card, and you all out there can do the same, with companies like this we are all better off with out the extra credit and working with banks that think that they are above the law.

Late Fee
08/27/2003
Well - They closed my account a while back when they decided to get out of the credit card business. Until then - I had no problems. After filing Bankruptcy, they gave me a non-secured card with a decent interest rate.
I pay my monthly bill electronically thru my bank. It's easier and I never make a late payment. Until now. Apparently, the company that took over the billing for FCNB changed the rules and instead of it only taking 5 business days for my epayment to reach them - it now takes 8 business days. I was just charged a 35.00 late fee. My bank researched it for me and said that this company now requests that my bank mail them a check instead of being electronically processed. Unfortunately, no one notified me to make a correction to when they draft my account. I was 2 days late. There isn't a phone number to call or talk to anyone. I sent a letter about 10 days ago - but I'm sure I'll not hear from anyone. Is there ANYTHING that can be done?????

rip-off company who preys on persons who are experiencing financial difficulties after divorce,
08/14/2003
It is evident from the numerous customer reviews that I have read, that this company is preying off of persons who have just gone through the trauma of bankruptcy by sending visa card offers immediately after persons file with the court. Since most bankruptcies are a bi-product of divorce or some family misfortune, people are easily lured into accepting the card and becoming trapped inside FCNB's revolving door of high-interest rates, late charges, and over-the-limit fees. In these difficult economic times, every company should offer some plan of payment that does not bury you when times get hard. It's a shame that this company was so methodically vicious in their relentless pursuit of fees. Their present status of being defunct is some consolation, even poetic justice; but how does one climb out of the proverbial hole with dignity?

When I was first issued my credit card my limit was $400.00. I have had this card for three years and because of the insane charges I can't get this card paid off. I've tried to get a hold of someone but you can't. I have paid these crazy charges in order to keep them from turning me in that I could have payed this card off four times. Why can't we get a hold of the company to talk to someone? How do we stop compananies like this from taking advantage of people?

I'm writing you in regards to FCNB.
I do not recall getting a refund for the story at this address
http://www.oregonlive.com/business/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/business/1059825996284050.xml
Beaverton bank told to pay back card fees.
Where did they get fined on top of this ?
Around the same time this accrued, this same bank eliminated the grace period and for two months did not notify and they claimed it was on the back of the statement bill, but it wasn't.
Then I got the call, it went over limit and late for two months and they used terrorist tactics to course me to accept that I had to pay this or it would be bad news for me.
I'm going to talk to my low price lawyer about this. LOL
When will we ever learn ??
Hope I pay them off, but I'm on SSDI and have been for the last 10 years.
Please look into this story too.
I'm glad FCNB went under they where crooks.
But how many other banks are doing this and are going to?
My credit doesn't amount to much as it is having disabilities.
It takes too much to build it up and it takes crooks like this and misfortune to mess it all up.
The banks can fine all they want and are inventing new sins to fine every day to make a profit.
I've raise my kids to see how they operate.
And our Government and tax dollars pay for this crap.
Please continue to investigate this kind of story and look more into the devilish details of this banks dealing.
If anyone thinks that this is all this bank did, they are sadly mistaken.
can't believe the Government gives these guys the power to punish, but they don't get punished.
I don't think just having to give the money back was enough.
What about the bad marks people received on their credit reports ????
You can't turn those around.
Who are all the people behind the curtain and are they held accountable as they have held the poor and weak and disabled accountable to a 2nd class or worse level, by there bad credit marks and credit reports???
Will the bankruptcy reflect on them and there credit reports ????
Will they suffer the stigma they have place on millions ?
Yet they held power to judge and punish as they see fit and this Government allowed and still does allow it.
This Government is not of the people or I guess it depends on what the definition of what people is ?
Too the Government people must mean Special interest and big business/Cooperates and anyone with the Cash and Means.
Fair banking practices ?
Ask Wells Fargo too.
But that's another nightmare.
Thanks for your time

WHAT A F******* RIP OFF OF A COMPANY
07/30/2003
When I was first given the CC, my limit was $1500, I purchased a total of $1000. I had been making payments until I was being charged ridiculus late charges, very high interest daily rate, over the limit, to the point that I just couldn't keep up with it. I now owe them $2300 and all from the stupid fees that have been added to my account. I called to have them stopped so that I could continue to pay them but nothing all that did was make my monthly payment go from $50/permth to $480/permth. I just simply could not afford to pay anymore.

They reported my fully paid account to the credit reporting agencies for six months as a chargeoff thereby damaging my credit. It took an attorney at my cost to fix that. Then a bank error caused a payment to be returned. No one at the bank could contact a soul there as they had shut down operations. They sent a letter anyway, but apparently there was no one to care about it. They blindly piled charges on top of charges and am trying to make me pay for it. Now they have turned me over to a collection agency.
I'm suing the company and have attorneys working on it right now. But because of their bankruptcy protection, there's little I'll get out of it..

LATE FEES ARE A RIP OFF
07/11/2003
I have always mailed my payments off early because I never trusted the U.S. Mail service to get them in on time. FCNB posted my check "after" the due date. I know they aren't trying to get late fees out of me. Are they that in debt and desperate? And then I found out the only form of communication with them is via writing. I am now about to mess my credit up over this company, and I am definitely not going to stay in debt with them by racking up late fees that shouldn't be there in the first place. months. I made a decision to pay the account off. I paid a large amount in March
and had a remaining balance of less than $300.00. In May I was short on cash so
I paid the minimun monthly payment of $10.00 due June 2nd. I maild the payment
more than (2) weeks of the due date I assumed it would be ost to the account in a
timely manner. When I received the following months bill I notice my payment post
to the account on June 3rd of $10.00 and a $35.00 late fee charged on June 2nd.
Unforunately I can not reach this company by phone all correspondence should be in
writing. So I wrote them and wrote them to no avail, no response. My July payment was
was due Julyt 3rd. I mailed the payment on June 24th to pay them in full minus the $35.00 pervious
late fee. The check was credit to my account on July 7th and anothe $35.00 late fee.
I now owe FCNB $75.00 in late fees. I had yet to hear a response from this company.
I ndon't understand why there is a dely in posting the payments. this has been a very
frustrating experience for me, my goal was to pay the account off , but FCNB is preventing
me from doing so, by continuing to charge me late fee.

I've seen a few posts about people who have sent in money and not received a card. I would double check where you sent your money, and who you wrote it out to, because I doubt it was FCNB (check your spelling). FCNB hasn't offered new visa or mastercards in quite some time, especially one where you had to send in money. FCNB has NEVER had a processing or application fee. The only two fees they've ever had is either a security deposit for the secured cards, or an annual fee which was billed to the card. If you've received a an offer in the mail requesting $, and there is no contact info, then let the buyer beware. This was something that is not affiliated with FCNB. In fact, FCNB has closed all of its cards and is going out of business.

FCNB Cancellation of all 'regular' VISA and MasterCard charge cards
03/12/2003
I have had my FCNB VISA charge card since 1999, have NEVER been late and have consistently paid more than the minimum due each month. My limit has been approx. $3400.00, and I paid this amount off in full, then ran the balance back up again to nearly $3,400.00. Now they have taken away the VISA and MasterCard cards, so I am left with an 19.8% interest rate and absolutely NO credit card privileges! I resent the fact that I have been an excellent customer/card holder for them, but am being penalized for their inability to handle their own finances! This is wrong, that I am no longer getting the services that I expect from them, yet am expected to continue to pay 19.5% interest on my card balance. I firmly believe this must be against the law, and I intend to inquire with an attorney as to what my legal rights are. I held up my end of our agreement. Their lack of concern for their customers in good standing is also reflected by the 'little post card' recently sent (just five days before cards were cancelled) to customers regarding the demise of their VISA and MasterCard charge priviedges. Then, when I called the customer service #, my questions were fielded by a representative reading a 'company script', which means I certainly did not get answers to my questions (a script!). How cowardly of their bank!
I am so glad that I did not use my Speigel card (with a $3,500.00 limit), and allowed the card to expire. Surely, their entire company will be out of business before the year is out, pushing the unemployment numbers up, up up! So sad!

It has been a real pleasure dealing with fcnb. and i will be apply for a eddie bauer credit card so i can continue.

Mismanaged accounts then termination of card with 4 days notice
03/03/2003
I have had a mastercard from FCNB since 2000. I never really had any problems with them until recently. I made one late payment last month and got hit with a $35 late fee. In turn, the late fee put me over my $350 credit limit so I was hit with another $35 over the limit fee, which they refused to waive. They then turned the account over to Alliance collection agency, which I didn't find out until I got the notice for $533. I called Alliance to find out why there was a discrepancy in my statement and the amount they were trying to collect from me. They were able to send out the collection notice with a reference number but couldn't even find my name in their system. When they couldn't find my name, they asked for my credit card number and my social security number - both of which I refused to give. I finally reached someone at FCNB to aske them why my account was turned over to collections after they had already received my payment. They put me on hold and gave me a bunch of malarchy. I paid the card down to $100 and went to buy my husband a birthday gift. I sat in my car and called the 800 number from my cell phone, but I got a busy signal. I didn't think anything of it. I just figured it was my cell phone. When I got to the store and tried to use my card today, "my account was unavailable." That pissed me off seeing as how I had paid to bring the account back into good standing. When I got home tonight and looked at my mail, I received a notice about the termination of my card - with no reason or excuse. I decided to call the 800 number and the line was busy. That pissed me off again so I got online to check my account and came across these reviews. I'm glad to see that I am not the only disgruntled consumer FCNB has left in the shadow of their fraud. Now, all I want is my security deposit back or applied to the remaining balance on my card, but I can't reach anyone by phone to handle it. I am putting my request in writing and forwarding copies of it to the appropriate authorities. With the card being cancelled in 3 days, I hope someone can help me get justice.

I paid all payments in full or when my balance went beyond $400 (I used during vacation), I had always paid more than the minimum and never less than $100/month. I just found out that FCNB was rejecting my current purchases and when I went online, the message that I received was that they were terminating my credit card. I never received any notification of the termination or their actions to discontinue approvals. Now I have to figure out which items were purchased during that time and to settle with the merchandising companies. It has been an inconvenience and I feel like one of those abandon lovers with no explanation. Was told that they can terminate my account without having to tell me reason why? My only question is why and if this will effect my credit standing. Don't apply for this card. I just pray that I'll get my $200 deposit without a fight.

My ex wife got this card and signed me up. It has a 450.00 limit and a 100.00 security deposit . I did not even know that the card existed until it came up on a credit report. original balance was 100.00 . with late fees and over limit fees it was at 610.00 . how is this possible when the card has a limit of 450.00 . any way I called and started paying the card on time and even payed lump sums to get the balance down . I asked for some of the 450.00 worth of fees to be waived and was denied because of last 6 months of activity . I did not even know I had the card . I wrote them like I was instructed and still did not recieve any help . I asked for the original contract so I could see if i even signed for the card but they were unable to give me that information. Barbara id #6al told me that they declined to waive 60.00 of the 450.00 late fees and over limit fees and that they would not remove the delinquent marks off of my credit even though I am now current and paying the amount . These people are rude , they will not help me out. they informed me I should prosecute my ex-wife. All of the other credit card companies have been more than willing to help out . All of them would not waive all of the late fees but anything will help. Do not get yourself mixed up with first consumer national bank. get a credit card from a local credit union and they will work with you . If this amount was more I would sue to get credit repair and amount removed but I am stuck with it like a lot of people you will read about . Run while you can .

I received a serious blow to my financial standing through no fault of my own and wrote FCNB, asking for their cooperation until I was back on my feet. a month later they sent me an unsigned form letter directing me to a credit counselling agency which I contacted and contracted with. FCNB held up the payment program by demanding one dollar more than the offer. Since then, they accept the payments but continue to charge me $70 per month in late and overlimit fees, plus 22% interest. My payment is $77 per month, you do the math. I have had a First Consumer Visa card for about a year and have been basically unsatisfied with the service. My main problem is missing invoices resulting in me paying late or not at all and having late fees and over the limit fees imposed. I recently moved, and although I provided my new address, still several invoices were lost due to them having the incorrect mailing address. I incurred over $100 in fees as a result. I wrote and informed them of this problem and they readily removed the fees, but now I find the same thing happening again!...I am not receiving my invoices, thus fees are being imposed! I have over 12 active Visa and MC accounts, I pay them all in a timely manner, this is the only one in which I have a problem! Also, First Consumer has a weired cash advance policy. It seems that you need to have a certain amount of money available on your account, before you can take out any of it in cash advance...none of my other credit cards have this policy. I am very unhappy with First Consumer.

I would just like to say I too closed out my account with this rip off company. I totally agree with everyone on here who, like myself was trying to rebuild credit. I really agree with Lana about that Mr. Sanchez. I filed Bankruptcy and a year later this was my first card .. after paying a 100.00 deposit.I had nothing but problems with there so called late fees which was all a bunch of crap. I worked in the Mortgage industry for many years and looked at lots of credit reports and FCNBs late fees were late according to them so they can take your money but they actuualy dont report a late for either 30 or 60 days, so technically it's not late as far as your credit report goes. I tried to have these people remove my late fees for .65 i was over, which they would not. I told them to use the 100.00 they made me pay up front. They did that and my payment was 1 day late (according to them) I sent the payment 3 days prior so i got charged again. Whazt a bunch of crap! I closed out my account. I have a target card which occassionally is over by 1 dollar and never get charged. The thing they seem to forget is that all we get is a letter saying we are approved. No details are sent. No address or phone no. It says membership details will be sent along with the card. well by then you've agreed to terms we didn't know about. FCNB employee
12/10/2002
I have worked at FCNB for almost 3 years in various departments including customer service, credit, instant credit, payment processing and collections. The problem that I see with why people do not like FCNB it that they fail to read the terms and agreements fully. Reading this before ever applying would save you AND us a heck of a headache. The "fees" box on every application(by law) explains each fee and the amount. Simply reading this explains the annual fee and when it will be assessed, how and when and how much the over the limit fee is and will be assesed, and how the late fees will be assessed and what the apr and penalty apr is.
But please remember that by law we process the payment for the day it was recieved at the bank if sent in the return envelope with the payment coupon. If you send it in your evelope without a coupon or to the general address as opposed to the payment address, we will process it within 5 buisness days. Usually we will backdate for the date recived. Western union, money gram and other payment option vary in time. Usually within 72 BUISNESS hours. Check by phone with customer service, albeit costs $8, should be given 3-5 buisness days to post.
If you send your payments in 5 days before the due date(including weekends) and so the payment posts late, you have no one to blame but yourself. You could have sent that payment in 10 buis. days before the due date, done wu or mg or a phone check. If the payment due date is not convenient, the call the customer service and have it changed.
But face it, the due date is the day that the payment is due. Not the day after or the day after that. We will charge a late fee.
If you don't want a late fee, send your payment when you get the statement. And if you don't recieve your statements, call the comepany and verify address is correct and remember that your payments are always due around the same date each month, really!!
If the account balance exceeds the credit line by even a penny, we will charge an over the the limit fee. Simple. You can call and get info about available credit from customer service, automated system or online.
Gas stations. When you charge with a credit or debit card at a gas station, the hold placed on the card is NOT for purchase amount of gas, unless you actually only purchase $1 in gas. They only authorize $1 even you purchase $20 or more or less. So if you have $5 avail and you purchase $10 in gas, when that purchase is charged, an overlimit fee will be charged. A way to keep track is to write all cc purchases in a register(an bank can give you one). Or keep the balance about $100 or more away from your credit line.
Payment amount. Making the minimum payment will keep the account current but does NOT show the ability to manage credit effectively. Good credit scores reflect an ability to manage checking, credit cards and income so that all needs are covered. Showing that you can make purchases and payments every month builds that. The best accounts I have ever seen is where the cardholder(s) charge and pay in full each month. Thereby on paying what they have charge with no interest.
Credit cards are a great way to pay double for a $5 shirt if not paid in full right away.
If just using a card card for monthly purchases of food, clothing etc, you should pay it in full when bill recived.
If you dispute and item on your statement and there are other valid charges, you still need to pay on the valid purchases. Or you will get a late fee.

I have read on this site the many negative reviews for this card, but I have news for you: there isn't a credit card company in the United States that would have acted differently. If you are over limit or late with a payment, the company will charge you. That's the way the company earns money, and they're quite up front about it.
I have never had a problem with this company to date. I've also never gone over my limit or paid late. I consistently receive credit line increases, and after having a Visa card for a few years, I was offered an Eddie Bauer charge and a Mastercard account.
Be realistic: play by the rules or pay! Don't blame the lender when you refuse to be fair. Even $.05 can put you over limit and one day late is still late.

The payment had crossed their cutoff so the account just kept acculmating lates fees ect. They told me they would correct/credit the fees, close the account and refund my security deposit. After a few weeks I called and spoke to someone else and they said the account was corrected but never closed. Hence, my security deposit wasn't refunded since the account was open. She said she would close it and make sure my deposit was refunded. More weeks go by and no deposit. I call again and they said that all of this had been done a a check was issued on 10/1. More waiting and no check. I call again only to found out the check was sent to the wrong address, my manager. I essentialy have two seperate accounting systems - a manager that handles the majority of my fiances as well as my own personal finances. I had specifically and emphatically requested that check come to me. I didn't want to to go to the other address because I knew it would create a probelm and it did. I called customer service a number of times and was told that their wasn't anything they could do. I did then my next statement says now I owe $96.00 that's $36.00 plus another
$60.00 add on fees If I don't pay this amount next month they will acess me another round of $60.00 + add on fees.
Thats $138.00 of add on charges. I have been with this credit card company for over 2 years with no late payment history. I have always paid them at least the minimum payment and on time.
They refuse to do anything about it dispite repeated calls even talking to a supervisor. This is a very vicious company that makes it's members pay heavly for thier own mistakes. This is a financially dangerous company to do business with. That promises to correct the problem only if you send in the demanded amount then charges you excess fees all over again. Warning do not apply for this card. Okay from what I know about FCNB is that they have there positive and negative sides. On the positive is that they provide credit cards for high risk customers to try and build there credit. I have read all the other complaints about FCNB and I cant disagree with all of them however, I do believe that most of them have been ruled by emotions and not looked at from an objective veiw point. FCNB does not mail out there statements late, there are other factors involved, the mail system, does not run as smooth as most people would like to believe. Late fees and overlimit fees, if you dont want a late fee, pay your bill on time, you DO NOT have to wait for your statement to pay the minimum balance. If your landlord didnt come to you every month to tell you rent was due, would you still pay it? Yes, b/c it is an amnt that is due on a monthly basis same as your FCNB bill. Over the limit fees, keep track of your balance it is not FCNB's job to alert you everytime your about to go over, take some responsibility for your personal finances. FCNB states the terms of use for every customer, if you were not clear on the fee's applicable to your credit card you should not have signed up for it. If you didnt think that you could manage money you should not have singed up for it. And if your life is consumed by complaining b/c of personal failure you should not have set yourself up for the oppurtunity to fail. Its that simple. Getting a credit card is not free money, you do have to pay it back and b/c of personal failure you should not blame others, blame yourself.

criminal enterprise
11/02/2002
My girlfriend had (has) an account with these criminals. I saw that she was up for an annual fee on a card with 20+% interest and a $1k limit. Told her to cancel and I would give her an Amex (real) card. Thats where the fun started. Took 3 months to cancel, then I paid all except a late fee that was bogus, and started with the letters to contest, etc. Now 4 more late fees and no satisfaction.
These people don't want to resolve issues. They have a pattern of sending out statements late, posting payments slowly, applying fees aggressively. They are running a criminal enterprise in my opinion - and there really needs to be a class action to get to the bottom of it. I understand they are dealing with sub-prime credit risks - but that does not give them the right to be unfair and unethical. The bad news is I just found out that they issue the Eddie Bauer card she has - now I have to pay that off as well!

I called to find out my wife's balance in June and I paid what they said, the balance would be 0 but there was a late fee added, after paying the amount requested. So they charged her a late fee, we didnt know there was a late fee added, and the next month the charged a late fee for the late fee, and so on. My wife has since paid more than 20 dollars over the quoted payoff and they are still trying to charge her a late fee. I am seeking counsel regarding this practice.

In my case, I used one of their cash access checks and they bounced the check because it exceeded their cash access limit by $32.00 even though I still had more than $2000 available on my total limit. I consider a credit card a loan from the bank, not a checking account that they have the liberty to bounce because you exceed the cash access limit even though you don't exceed your total limit. I am very angry that they did this to me and I can tell the audience without a doubt that there are much better cards that do not play this game with their customers.

I called one day before my bill was due to make a phone payment. They informed me the payment would not be posted for 5 days. I then asked them how I could pay on time and they suggested an electronic wire transfer. I called my bank to arrange the transfer. The customer service reps. couldn't give me the information the bank needed to complete the transfer so my bank called them directly. They told the bank that even though the wire tranfer would arrive the day the payment was due it wouldn't be posted until the day after, when one of their employees processed it. My bank had never heard of such a thing and recommended I cancel my credit card. When I called to voice my disappointment and cancel my credit card the rep. laughed at me and then hung up. I opened this account - at their invitation - after filing bankruptcy. I never really used it much. Then I noticed I had some unauthorized charges - some credit reporting fee, an annual fee and an overlimit fee. I got the credit reporting fee taken off, and then told them to cancel the car as I didn't want to pay the annual fee - which is for the period of June 02/03. So once that came off, then there would be no reason for the overlimit fee.
I think their brainwashed into saying NO. They don't respond. They told me that I authorized the annual fee in the initial agreement, but if you want to cancel the card - why should I have to pay for it.

I understand that I am to get my payments in on time, but the customer "service" reps were AWFUL!! They must be trained to be asses. Customer Service and misc. fraudulent charges
08/10/2002
Getting a credit card from this bank is the worst experience I have had with any other business, bank, etc. Even MCI which is also in the rude, no customer, illegal charges business is better than this scam. I closed my account on Easter Sunday. Why? Because a customer service representative claimed my account was over the limit and I need to give a check over the phone asap. I explained I had not recieved the bill yet! He still wanted money. I refused. I gave some thought again and decided to phone back to close my account. After waiting an hour, someone answered and hung up on me when I told him I was closing the account. I phoned back again, waited another hour and finally was able to close the account with an extremely rude, belittling rep. I was then charged a membership fee the following month. I wrote that I had closed the account on Easter Sunday. They then charged me the following month AGAIN!! However, they gave me a credit for the second month. This $49.00 membership fee put me over the limit. Of course they charged me an overlimit fee again. Plus, every single month I am charged a late fee. Even though my payment is not late!! I have written 4letters, phoned about 6 times to no avail. Today I waited almost 2hours for a no customer service rep to pick up. I told her I wanted my $49 back and she hung up on me. Just as they always do. They are Rude. Arrogant. Condescending. I have now written to the Better Business Bureau. I am so upset with this whole matter. Beware of this company. I first got my card in July of last year. I have paid more in misc. charges that they have put on my card than purchases I have made. In the month of May my balance was 285.00 and my credit line was $300. I mailed my payment of $10 on time on May 1. They say they never received my payment until May 21. On May 13, when my payment was due, and since they say they had not received my payment, they charged me a $35 late fee which put me over my credit limit. They also charged me a $35 overlimit fee. Three days later, on May 16, they charged me another $35 overlimit charge because they said that is when their statements are printed and that they had not yet received my payment. So, even though I mailed my payment on time, I was charged $105 in late payments and they would not take any late charges off because they said they have no control over the US Postal Service. I had to make a payment of $120 to bring my account up to date on June 1. Since then, I have reduced my balance to $252, and have been mailing my payments 20 days in advance. I just received a letter yesterday saying that I needed to call right away because my account was over the limit. I called FCNB right away and was on hold for 1.5 hours. Finally I got ahold of customer service who told me that they had charged my account the $69 yearly fee which put me over my limit and that they had then charged me a $35 overlimit charge and that I would be charged another $35 overlimit charge the middle of Aug. I cancelled my card on the phone and they promised me the $69 yearly charge and the $35 overlimit charge would be removed. I don't believe a word they say. I was told that on Jan. 1, 2002, they began a 0 day grace period. They had a grace period prior to that. What that means is that if your payment is received one day after the due date they charge you $35. I am sure they have made a lot of money off of this because FCNB does not process payments when they receive them. This is a very fraudulent company.

FCNB is totally riduculous in so far as how they post payments to your account. They asked me to consider 11 days to mail out your payment due to Sept 11 and the mail being slow. I like many individuals have a scheduled time/date whereby I make payments/write checks which is based upon my pay periods and I also allow for a normal time for payments to be received/posted. I thought I would contribute to this as well. I was on-line looking for the FCNB website, and found this site! What an eye-opener! I thought I was the only one getting screwed! I had experanced the same thing, were some how I was put over my credit limit by charges, and then it just snow balled so bad I couldn't afford to pay the minimum payment due at all. I had a credit limit of only $300. By the time it was done, I owed $1,100! I tried and tried to cancel as well, in writing even. They don't care. They want to keep racking up the charges. A few months went by, and a collection agency contacted me and said he realizes this is a terrible company, but it is his job to try to collect on it. He though the 700 plus charges were rediculous, and said if I wrote a letter giving some kind of reason, (finiancial hard-ship,etc.)he was sure the would cut this in half, but he had never seen them do any more than this. I was excited to have the offer...but now that I read these, I am thinking why sould I even have to pay HALF? Something just isn't right. I am interested in learing more about this class-action lawsuite, if someone with the info could e-mail me. As consumers, we need to stand up for our rights. A company like this thrives off of people with bad credit - and takes advantage of them, thinking we are all too stupid to do anything about it. I'll pay my $300 bill, but nothing more. I plan on investigating this company further. I would suggest that if you do have these same problems, you request a copy of your credit report, and there is a space that you can put your comments and send back to the credit bureau. They have to print your comments. I plan on putting something in there about fradulant, illegal charges, and a class-action lawsuit. Atleast this way, your when your credit is looked at, they will see this and understand what is going on. This is the only blemish I have on my report right now. Good luck everyone! I hope they do everyone a favor and go out of business soon!!

07/26/2002
This company often charges $70 for overlimit fees. This happens
when you go over the limit, whether it's because of their fees or
your purchases, after the 5th of each month. Then when the 5th of
the following month rolls around, they tack on another $35. You
are not allowed to pay off the first fee before they tack on another
fee. They prey on people with bad credit and are very good at
trashing any hope you have at improving your credit. I payed my
bill on time every month - always more than the minimum - and
they still found a way to take advantage of me. By making their
fees count towards the credit limit, they are able to throw your
balance over the limit and are able to charge you a fee for doing
such. Quick way for them to make money dishonestly. Stay away
from this company.

I was so happy that after bankruptcy that someone would offer and approve me for a unsecured credit card. It sounded get a first but once I got the card. I realized that it was not a good deal at all. They charge you a fee for everything. Overall the purpose for check by phone and western union is to make a payment on time, but FCNB do not post the payment until they feel like it. It takes up to 5 days to post. By then your payment is late. Say for instance, if your payment is due on the 17th and you call on the 16th to make a payment, the payment will not show posted until the 21st. I could see the money not being available until up to 5 days. The payment doesn't post at all and your account shows a late payment. They have never charged me a late payment but they always show that I pay late. And because of this my APR increased to 22.9%. I paid faithfully every month, not realizing I was a little late. But, you cannot send a payment, until you have the money to cover it. Then I noticed the minimum payment on the little $300 credit limit, was $171.00. I found the small print at the bottom of the statement, telling me that there was $35.00, late, and $35.00 overlimit fee. Every month. Could not resolve it with them. They would not talk to me. I sent partial payments, and my May statement, the balance was $304.19. I sent $20, on june 3, & june 5. This put the aalance at 299.19. I called, and was told that they had charged me a 35.00 overlimit fee. The due date is june 12. closing date june 18. So they charged me a "late fee" of $35.00. That late fee put me over my limit by $29.00. They charged me an "over limit fee" of $35.00, then "Cycled" my account and they charged another $35.00 for "over limit" fee. That is $105.00 in fee's! I would agree to a late, but they should not be able to charge over limit fee's when they put me over my limit with their fee's!

FCNB Credit Cards - BUYER BEWARE!
05/13/2002
This account is one of my biggest headaches. I have other credit card accounts with various other lenders and have never had such a rough time keeping up and making my bill payments with this one card. The problem I encounter with FCNB is that they bill any service charges, late fees, etc. AFTER the billing cycle has run. One month I got a bill with a minimum payment due of $20. Several days later I called to discover that I'm now $100 over my credit limit. Turns out my payment was ONE day late so they charged me a late fee - AFTER the billing cycle had run. They then charged me an over the limit fee because the late payment fee took me over my credit limit - again this was AFTER the billing cycle had run. Add up that and all the other fees I now owe them a payment of $120. I've got other cards and am on a limited budget. I can't afford to pay $100 or more each month just because of their billing process. I HATE THIS CARD and would NOT recommend it to anyone else! I have CLOSED my account with them and do not plan to do any more business with this cheating company.
Most Attractive Feature: There are no special services with this card.

I have had nothing but hassles with these folks from the first statement I recieved. It only got worse after I became unemployed, and applied for my credit card protection benefits which I had bought through their sponsored insurance company. The insurance company would not pay on the claim until First Consumers had sent them copies of the statements covering the period of my loss. I lost my position in October, and to this date First Consumer's has not yet delivered these statements. I, becuase of a household relocation, had lost the specific statements in question. (I did not discover that First Consumer's had not sent the information until eight weeks later when the insurance company informed me that my claim had been closed due to lack of required data. I immediately began making phone calls. And my conversations with the individual employees of this company was as fruitless and frustrating as were those of previous posts. I too have seen payments held. The most recent of which was the insurance company payoff. (I finally found my statements) The insurance company sent me a letter stating that a 400.00 payment had been made a week prior to the date on the letter. First Consumers, now three weeks after my reciept of the same letter has not posted the payment.
I am going to the Better Business Bureau on this one.

This company is the most misleading out there and it lacks repoire. The offer they mail you says they'll match your deposit by 300%, but then, after you apply, they change their terms to up to 300% deposit matching, match nothing to even a $1000 deposit and then charge you daily to use your own money. If you want to cancel because you did not agree to these altered terms, expect to wait 3-4 months just to get your money back, less a processing fee (when you are the one who has been inconvenienced). Supposedly you earn interest on your deposit, but it is never applied to your balance, so what's the point of having something when it's not accessible? Their customer service representatives are rude and could care less about having your business. I would strongly discourage anyone fool enough to invest in this scam (this coming from a highly dissatisfied fool, who learned the hard way-by experince.) Terribly poor experience!
Most Attractive Feature: cancellation-even that's no benefit because there's a fee

Shortly after receiving card, they informed me of a change in interest rates, etc. Naturally, evderything was going up. I closed account. Every since this, I have had nothing but problems with them. Every month they keep adding either a late or over limit charge to account, even though I have been going through a dispute resolution process with them. They never credited a payment in Jan 2002. Trying to resolve this missing payment, I followed their instructions on how to proceed. They directed me to write to Dispute Resolution Dept. Dis so two months in a row, Feb and Mar. Never received any response from them. Called them last week after receiving another statement with another overlimit charge on it. Called the NON-CUSTOMER SERVICE again, snf was told this time that Dispute resolution Dept does not resolve fee items. NICE, after waiting 3 months for their response, they just kept tacking a $29.00 monthly fee for three months. Finally got ahold of a person their who seemed to care, and took down all the information concerning my complaints, the letters, many phone calls, etc. and they said I would have a response with 7-10 working days.
Got their response today which basiaclly said Too Bad and you have to pay the fees. No name on it, just some scribbling which looks like a taggers mark on a freight train. All I can say about this bank is **LET THE BUYER BEWARE**

This company has extrememly poor customer service. I received a late fee and reviewed my previous statements, which showed I was current. This also put me over the limit = $70 in fees. I called customer service and they advised me that the late fee was from 4 months earlier and the system "just caught up". I reviewed my checkbook and sure enough the payment never cleared even though it was mailed with a batch of payments for other companies that have all cleared. I advised them I would not be over limit if it weren't for the fees. I closed the account. I agreed to pay the charges over the phone, but I was advised that it would take 5 days to post. I mailed it in. It still took them 2 weeks to post the payment. The original payment never showed up. I agreed to accept the card because of a low APR. It now has the highest APR of any of my cards. This card pales in comparison to other Visa and Mastercard accounts. This was a big mistake!

I usually come to these boards to read comments about credit cards before I apply for them, but since I had not come to this board before getting a FCNB credit card, I had no idea how many people had bad experiences with it. So far I am doing great with the credit card from FCNB. Sending my payments in a week before they are due and it usually takes exactly a week to post, on time thank goodness. I was told to call back in 6 months to ask for a credit line increase as long as I have no over the limit fees or late payments, and I don't. My husband has had awful experience with them so far. And that's because he did not read the entire agreement in that he thought he had a credit limit of $300.00 and didn't know they took out their fees of $49.00 from the $300.00. He became over the limit right away and now owes $575.00 for the card and it has gone to a collection agency. So far I am satisfied with the card and have no intentions of incurring those over the limit fees because they are a killer.

I was two months late, I ask for a bill, as soon as I received it I paid, with $200 still owning.I can not get credit anywhere because they put it against history. They refuse to take it off. I then had to call last month again because they changed my address again, I was 5 day late.I have to call monthly because my address keeps getting changed, they say that it keeps going to a previous address. I wish I would have read the reviews on this company prior to obtaining a card from them. I have consistently been charges over the limit fees and late fees for the last 4 months. Every month I contact Customer Service and they have some excuse as to why this has heppened. They consistently take about two weeks to cash the check and apply it(I swear they hold checks). I called and complained this past time and threatened to close account. My payment was received and applied within 5 days. (Why did it always take at least 12 days.) I still closed out my account, and told them they are a deplorable so called business (there is no way to win with them). I had this card for less than one month and my home was burglarized and my card stolen. Although they re-issed the card promptly, they transferred all of the fraudulent charges over to my new account without any warning or reason and then cancelled my new card account because I was over the limit. After writing to the Credit Dept. and talking to customer service over and over and over again, they declined to open my account "Due to poor history with FCNB". Again, I had the account(s) for less than 60 days by the time this was all over. Furthermore, they were slow to post one of my payments to this account and therefore charged me a $35.00 fee even though the check was electronically transferred from Bank of America 7 days before the payment due date. When I called customer service to ask about the charge--I was told "You signed the agreement so you know we can charge your account these fees" Then the Customer Service agent "Crystal" said, "I am now disconnecting this call." and she hung up on me. All in all, this is THE worst credit card company I have ever dealt with in my entire life. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY!!!!!

I filled out a form which I then had to have notarized... one of the questions on there was what is the perpetrators social security number!!! I sent it in and then was sent notice that I had to re-send the material and have it notarized.
I called their office and a man who barely spoke English got on the phone, I told him when asked when I would have the paperwork filled out, when you pay for the notarization of the exact same form that I already sent. He was verbally abusive and when I called back I was told that he was wrong, all I had to do was fax in some info. I have an Eddie Bauer credit card that is handled by this bank and the other negative comments I have read fit my experience exactly. I am 48 years old and have never had any financial difficulties, even minor ones, and somehow this bank has created them for me. I have contacted my bank and they are going to call FCNB for me. They have also given a consumer protection number (1-800-680-7289) in which to file a complaint, and they have recommended that I connect with the FCNB website and start emailing them regularly. They also stated that they would require nofication when they have cleared my account. I have two other cards that I pay on-line and receive helpful service and reasonable fees --even reversals of fees when I ask for it. This company is awful -- I will paying off my balance forever until I am able to pay it off in full. Even then, I am sure they will find a way to charge a late fee! Well that's not the bad part, although it's not good, but after my money was gone off of the card they continued to charge me late fees and monthly charges which ended up to be over $900.. Now how I went from spending $100 of my own money to oweing them $900 is beyond me, and when I tried to call and get it straighted out, they left me on hold for about 20 minutes. Even worse they will charge you an overlimit fee after your billing closes out so you won't see it on your bill until the next month and unless you sent a large payment it probably generated another overlimit fee.

I have not so good credit from my past, and they let me have an unsecured card, and only charged a $49.00 anual fee! That's the only fee!I was amazed! Plus, with a credit limit of over $400.00!
Most Attractive Feature: Unsecured, with only a $49.00 annual fee! That's it!

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!
05/24/2000
The experience I have had with the customer service at FCNB was worse then poor. I received my first statement from FCNB around 4-22. The closing date was 4-19-00 due 5-14-00 with a monthly payment of $10. I send a $20 payment 4-26-00. Today on 5-25-00 I receive a letter from FCNB stating I am over my limit by $35.39. I immediately called the number given and spoke with Janelle. She went on to to tell me there was nothing they could do to stop the charges from being made once I hit my limit, "that's the way credit cards work Holli." I went on to tell her I do not have this problem with any other credit card. I mean how rediculous is that statement she made with me. Then I asked to speak with a manager she told me "I am not getting him off of his phone to talk to you until I know what you need to speak to him about. To me this is horrible customer assistance. Finally after about 5 minutes of waiting Chris came on the phone and said to me, "when you are late with paym!
ents you get charged fees. I am horrified by that statement. I only received one statement and mailed a payment immediately plus doulbled the monthly payment requested which by the way FCNB received by 4-29-00. I asked Chris if he prefer that I call back in the morning and speak to another manager. He seemed very upset with my call and obviously did not want to be bothered. That is fine, what we will do is transfer our balances to another credit card and let them be paid the interest. I have been with FCNB for many years now and take pride in my good credit with them, but customer service is very important and if I can't be treated as a valued customer I will call it quits. Oh, and I didn't appreciate Chris trying to turn it around on me and saying I was yelling at him when he clearly came to the phone with an attitude. I would of made a payment on the phone by check but not getting that attitude from Chris was I willing to do so. My rating for this card over all is j!
ust plain bad experience and sorry I ever opened it!!!
