Not worth the plastic
05/04/2012
I am renovating an old house and got this card so that I could take advantage of the 5% off of all purchases. I first used it to buy all bath fixtures, plumbing, and other things, using up nearly all of the available credit. I got my bill, paid off the entire balance, and my money was withdrawn from my bank account the day after I made the online check payment. Five days later, I went to HD to buy all of my ceiling fans and light fixtures plus other sundries and the card was declined. So much for the 5% back on that large purchase. I called customer service and was told, after being transferred THREE times, that since it was a new account, they put a NINETEEN (19) day hold on the payment. NINETEEN DAYS. Really? Reasons? 1. When we get a payment, we compare it to the previous month's payment and yours is a new account so we didn't have anything to compare it to. Apparently this sent the computers into a frenetic looping program and they blew up? 2. When people pay off their whole balance, or an amount more than the minimum payment, we put a hold on it because we're not sure they meant to pay that much. Really? Since when did Citibank give a rat's behind about their customers? 3. We can find out if we can do a three-way call with your bank as to whether or not the monies have transferred but they probably didn't send it right away. Really? Because I'm looking at my account online right now and the money cleared a week ago. In fact, it was so long ago, I had to click "more" to get more transactions to show up in the "recent transactions" box. 4. We put a hold on the payment to make sure there were funds to cover the payment when the payment comes in. What about since it is an electronic payment? The payment is instant - it's not like a week-old check on an account that might NOW be overdrawn. 5. We put a hold on electronic payments because even if they go through to us, we can't verify that they are here but again, we can call your bank with you on the line to verify that. So you need to call my bank to have MY bank verify that YOU have MY money? How do they know? Is Citibank going to let my little local bank look at their records? To sum it up, if I can't take advantage of the 5% off, the card is of no use. I cancelled and will just shop at Lowe's.

Every time I make an online payment for The Home Depot card it tells me exactly when it will post... read the pages after you click on submit. If I can do this from the Middle East you are very likely suffering from a low IQ. Or, you FINANCED something that you could not afford. And a "Pay off balance" only applies to accounts in default. Pay your balance every month and its a pretty sweet deal.

Black hole of payments!
08/19/2010
If you have a HOME DEPOT CARD you need to know this....
In making a payment if you miss their "due date" but get it in within one to four days of that date you will be charged a late fee. Their explanation is "You missed the billing date but paid within the billing period so it won't credit towards your next bill. So you got a late fee." WHAT???!!! Yes, ladies and gents, there is a payment black hole in the payment system at HD!!! I set up our payments to pay off our 6 month same as cash monthly on the 10th. Billing "ended" on the 6th so 2 months later I have 2 late fees even though I've made 3 payments amounting to more than 1/3 of the balance. Where's the legislation to stop these thieves - the shell game continues!! I closed our $12000 credit line.
Most Attractive Feature: same as cash
Least Attractive Feature: The black hole between the billing date and the billing period close date.

My wife and I were told that our payments would be applied to our promotional balance and they were not....now I am going to have over $400 in interest added to my account in July! We knew that the promo balance had to be paid off before then, which it would have been if what the store clerk had told us was correct. Now I am seeing that our initial $1500 purchase still has $1300 left on it after a YEAR and 11 payments!!! I am beyond upset at this.....we have been loyal customers from day 1 and now, because we were not told to physically call in and request that our payments be applied to our promotional balance, we are getting hosed with a large interest charge. And no, I am not mistaken about what the store clerk told me. She said that all payments would go to the promo balance even if we came back and added more items to our account.....which made me happy and we did repeatedly. We could have had the promo balance paid off long ago! This NEEDS to be addressed! We do have other shopping options....and so do our friends and family.
Most Attractive Feature: they gave me a high limit right away......
Least Attractive Feature: ......but now i know why.

Have had a card for 5 years and maybe late by 5 days a couple of times, I forgot to schedule my payment due on the 5th and paid it on the 10th. Tried to use my card to charge $50.00 worth of items and they denied the charge. I was not anywhere close to my limit and only 5 days late. They do not appreciate the customers. It is not Home Depot's fault it is GE Monogram who holds their cards, from now on I am just paying cash and GE Monogram can go to he double L

People should read what they are signing.
03/05/2010
As I went through and read all of your "complaints" about this card I couldn't help but laugh. Have any of you actually READ the card agreement? Or did you just blindly sign your life away? For all you know there could've been a clause stating they will take your first born son if you default.
As for the guy who said they don't give pay off balances and for some reason it's his God given right. Here's why:
Finance charges are calculated on a daily basis and accrue from the day your statement starts until either the day its paid in full OR your statement cycle ends, in which case you are bill the finance charges for the time you .. (all together now) FINANCED the balance! The ONLY way to avoid it would be to pay off your balance the month after your purchase it! Woo hoo! Isn't learning fun??
And someone else complained about how when they use online bill pay it doesn't post the same day and Home Depot is viciously holding the money so they can charge a late fee. Again, read what you are doing! ANY online bill pay is NOT instant. If you make your payment today it will not post today, it will be processed and sent out. If you read the terms for your online bill pay you'll find it will ALWAYS take 2-3 days for them to receive. So! Let's do the math! My due date is tomorrow! OH NO! Wait! I can go through my online bill pay!! WOO HOO! ... wait... 1 .. + 2 ... isn't that ... 3? (BIG STAR SHOOTS ACCROSS) "The more you know"
Almost all of you are at fault and just don't want to take blame. It's so easy to be ignorant and blame someone else than realize ITS YOUR FAULT..
And by the way, I don't even have a Home Depot card. This was all just common sense lol.
Good luck.

I can't get my payoff amount?? Really??
03/03/2010
So I called Home Depot tonight to complain. Last month I decided to pay off the card so I called Home Depot for the pay off amount. The person on the other end graciously obliged and I thought it was all good. NOT!! I received another bill today for $16.98. I called them back up to inquire as to why I was charged this. They said I owed it. When I stated that I paid them the pay off amount the gentleman informaed me that they do not give pay off amounts! Then he informed me if I wished to pay off the card I need to add another two dollars to the payment for finance charges. I am absolutely floored that they will not help the consumer pay off their debt by giving me information to which I should be entitled to (pay off amounts). The gentleman (and I use the term loosely) even went to the extent to inform me that there was no federal law that he was aware of that required them to do so. I closed my account!! I highly recommend anyone....ANYONE who reads this posting to not do business with these folks.

I have never had so much trouble with a credit card! The monthly due date changes regularly each month. I have a regular payment set up to be withdrawn automatically from my checking account. And it took me a couple of times to catch onto the changing due date. But even so, my checking account will show that the payment was deducted & posted from my account as being received to my Home Depot account -Yet Home Depot calls saying it hasnt been received, They dont post it to my statement & charge me late fees!! Its a bunch of BS!! I hate this card & will close the account as soon as possible!!

To be avoided when better credit options are available
11/15/2008
I got the HD card for one moderate-size purchase. Thankfully, I will have that paid off in short order. Having had both good and bad experiences with credit companies in the past, I recognized some of the worst traits:
Auto-dialing calls every 2 hours to my phone starting 3 days after the first billing due date (In my case, I was waiting for the initial BillPay through my bank to reach Citibank.)
22.99% interest for Excellent Credit. (I average 8% with others companies.)
Unless you feel a strong need to have a card specifically for Home Depot (**or** Lowe''''s), there are other, better options. This card can be used to your benefit if you know how to work with the $300 purchase/No interest for x-months plan. Otherwise, this is a card (and a credit company) to avoid.
Most Attractive Feature: Only useful if you know how to work with the $300 /no interest benefit.
Least Attractive Feature: Exorbitantly high interest, no matter the credit rating. Unpleasant customer service.

Very convenient for intelligent people...
11/10/2008
I have had this card for years and I have never had a problem. I only use it for purchases of $300 *or* more so I can get 0% deferred financing. This card is great if you have some big purchases to make. But be sure to pay your balance off before the promo rate expires. Otherwise, they will hit you with ALL of the interest that built up during that time.
People on this board are so upset that their payments only pay down 0% balances while any other balances accrue interest. But that is how ALL credit cards work and it is stated in the terms of use. Payments will always be applied to balances with lower interest. It is not a big secret.
As for the people that opened accounts for their irresponsible children, who then maxed out the cards and defaulted... lesson learned. If your kid has terrible credit and can not open an account, then they probably should not have another credit account. Your children should be ashamed of themselves. That is why our economy is teh way it is, banks were willing to issue credit to people that could not handle it.
I have never had a problem with the customer service. But I make all of my payments on time and I am in good standing with them. So why would they be rude to me?
Bottom line... this card is great for people that are responsible enough to handle it. The deferred financing is very convenient, especially when it is for 18 months. Please do not get this card if you are irresponsible and will not make payments. I do not want my benefits compromised because of you (*or* your children).
Most Attractive Feature: Deferred financing -- sometimes for 18 months.
Least Attractive Feature: High APR, but after all, it is a store issued credit card.

When I built a shed in my back yard, I went to HD to get the materials. Racking up over $1,000, I decided to take advantage of the "interest free" deal, keep my money in the bank for a half year to collect interest, and pay off the bill in 6 months. Wen I completed my project, I had materials left over and decided top return them to HD for a refund ($180). No problem. They refunded my money, crediting the amount to my card. Five weeks after I got the card, I got a call from CITIBANK, a lady who couldn't speak english well, telling me that I was delinquent on my card and to pay $44. She would take a credit card billing over the phone. Outraged because I didn't get a bill and shouldn't have a balance due, I got online, registered and looked at my bill. Unbelievable! They charged me $13 to return items and started charging me interest on the $13! I opened the account in July, it closed for billing 10 days later and because I didn't pay the $13, they added $30 as a late fee! Telling the lady from the credit card company that I just got the card and never received a bill she simlpy wanted to differ, claiming that I did receive it. Unwilling to argue with an idiot, I paid the amount in full and cancelled the credit card. The issuing company wanted to know what they could do to keep my business. I was livid. Am I dealing with the MOB? Bottom line: This card was set up to snag suckers into paying more and it works. Don't get the card, use cash or legitimate credit. CITIBANK and Home Depot must be aligned with the MAFIA. Shame on them!

6 months deferred interest....maybe, maybe not!
01/09/2005
I purchased over $2,500 worth of remodelling material, including a shower door at $185, with their credit card. The gimmick was, for any purchase over $299, interest/payment is deferred 6 months. Well the shower door had to be returned and replaced. They gave me the credit entry on the card and then added the "new purchase". I learned that the "new purchase" was not part of the deferred interest/payment plan. Furthermore, when I made a payment of over $1,000 toward the account, it was porated to both the initial purchase and the "new purchase". With that system of accounting, you can NEVER pay off the "new purchase" in full without paying the entire account in full. I argued with the accounting department since they were charging late fees and interest both. I soon paid the entire balance and informed them that I would use the card again only if I needed to scrape gum from the bottom of my shoe. Unfortunately, I am seeing similar offers from other stores. Beware of all home improvement credit offers!
Most Attractive Feature: If you make a one-time purchase over $300 you could defer interest 6 months
Least Attractive Feature: If you add one more item under $300 to the initial purchase, you can forget deferring.

I obtained this card for my daughter in Feb. of 2001. My daughter had bad credit and could not get approved. They immediately issued me a
-PREFFERED- customer card with a $8,000.00 limit. By May 2001 the card was at its limit. My daughter had been doing many repairs on her home. She told me to ask for a credit line increase, I did and got it. My new limit was $10,700.00. In Nov. of 2001 my daughter suffered a messy divorce and became unable to make anymore payments to Home Depot. I almost had a heart attack when she handed the bill over to me. The payments were $262.50 on a $10,232.81 balance!!!!!!!!!! I am 78 yrs.old and on a very fixed income. I called MCBG and told them to freeze the account and that if i may only send them $150.00 a month? After 1 hour on the phone speaking to different people I made a payment plan with them. Unfortuneatly, my ex-son in law got ahold of his old "authorized user" card and put a $750.00 charge on it. I called MCBG and yelled to them

Monogram's non-deffered billing was very confusing and I agree with the people that have posted on this forum about how unfair payments are applied to the account. However, with the new bank things are applied different and the account makes more sense.
