An exercise in fine print reading
01/07/2002
On the face of it this sounds like a fine card. Airline miles for no annual fee? Unheard of! 1.7% APR intro rate until July, 2002 on purchases, cash advances, balance transfers? Great! Fixed APR of 9.9% after the intro rate expires? This just gets better & better!
Right?
WRONG!
Once you get into the small print you'll see that this could be one of the most expensive cards you could get.
First, there's a 3% transaction fee on cash advances & balance transfers. This caps at $40.00, which is a bit lower than some banks
Second, the 9,9% rate isn't guaranteed for five minutes. They could raise it the day after it went into effect. They do not say that the rate is tied to any of the popular indicators; just that it is, "not guaranteed and subject to change."
However, to me the stake through the heard for this card is ZERO GRACE PERIOD FOR ANY TRANSACTION! In other words purchases start to accrue finance charges from day one. With this card you will ALWAYS pay a finance charge. By my calculations, if you spent $25,000.00 per year to get one round trip ticket you'd be paying about $100.00 in finance charges, assuming you paid off your balance each month. However, that's assuming that they don't double or triple the APR.
My own feeling is I'd rather get a card that gives cash rebates and pay for my airline tickets with that card.
Most Attractive Feature: No annual fee, no blackout dates, 25,000 miles for free flights
Least Attractive Feature: No grace period!! Cardholder pays interest on purchases from day one.
