costco american express card gives you 2% cash back is not true.
1. it means upto 2%
2. you really are getting very little cash back
3. rewards back only if you pay 40 dollars fee which is charged to you card as other without mentioning american express clearly in the statement.gobbly goo as usual. |

| I received a letter today from ShopRite/Amex stating that they did not send me a store credit coupon as promised with my March statement. The letter went on to apologized and "enclosed a ShopRite Gift Card". Only problem, the envelope contained no enclosure. Now I am waiting to see if they send me something to apologize for their apology! |

Until this January I used this card without problems.
My old card expiration date was January 2004. So, silly me, I assumed that the card is valid until the end of January. On January 2nd I went to the store and the bill was declined. I called service and they said that by some computer glitch the card was cancelled one month before it was supposed to: apparently they change the number when the old card expires, so for some reason this year they did it earlier. They said I should be getting the card "any day". A couple of weeks later on January 14th I called them and told I didn't get it. They said they would cancel it and send me the new one. Two weeks later and still no card, I called them again. They said it was only shipped on January 26th?! A week later I called them again, they said 'maybe it was sent to this address' and told me the address I hadn't lived at for the past 5 years. So, for 5 years they were sending me bills to my current address, but somehow there was still the old address somewhere in their system. What a mess!
They told me they would send me my new card right away with Federal Express and that it will go out on Friday. So today I stayed home and spent a day waiting for it. It never arrived. I called the service again, and they told me that their computers say it was sent yesterday i.e. on Sunday and that I should get it either on Monday or Tuesday. They didn't have any answer to my questions as to why it wasn't sent on Friday or how could it have been sent on Sunday. So, now they expect me to wait two more days for it to arrive. I am seriously tempted to cancel the whole thing, except for I like the cashback at shoprite where I usually shop for food, and as I am a convenience user and always pay my credit card bills in full, I don't care much about interest. |

| "The AMEX Shoprite AMEX card is NOT quite an AMEX card = PROBLEM" |
It was a Shoprite MasterCard when I got it but turned into an AMEX Shoprite card. I didn't care. In fact, I was happy to have an AMEX card. Always nice to have a good company on your side, eh? At least, I THOUGHT it was a regular AMEX card. It is NOT! You can't tell the difference most of the time. Little things like you can't pay online like a regular AMEX card although you can call them and give them your bank account number every month.
There were no problems with my regular usage just like I have no problems with my other credit cards. Customer Service was pretty good, but my problem was when I had a little dispute with a vendor. You'd think AMEX would be well run and help their customers... especially when there is lots of evidence in their (my) favor. But their dispute department is so messed up that they lost my fax, never received messages to contact me, and denied things that were read to me from their own records. The dispute department is rude and contemptuous. If you have a dispute, they will leave you hanging for 60 days and then tell you to send proof for a thing they should know is not possible. They told me they are not permitted to speak to the vendors when one phone call is often all it takes to clear up a problem.
OK. So everyone has a bad experience. But when I tried to find out WHY they were so messed up, they replied one time with the incorrect form letter and that was it. You CAN’T call because they claim they don’t have a phone number to give you. Yes, I spoke to the supervisor, but she didn’t seem to understand that I was annoyed at the way my dispute was handled and put in my records that it was because I didn’t like that I had to send proof of return. I think they knew it was a postage-paid envelope, so how could I have proof? I also pointed them to numerous other people having the same problem. But no. Prove it or tough luck. Wow. Some dispute resolution. And the vendor WANTED to credit me. AMEX made it next to impossible!
Even when I called their NY main office, I was told that they had nothing to do with the Shoprite AMEX and could not even access my records.
You get 1% back on Shoprite purchases and 1/2% on all else. Big deal. If you want an AMEX card, get a real one. Or get a BankOne Free Cash Rewards card and get 1% cash back on ALL purchases. I cancelled my card this morning.

| "I love my card" |
| When I first got the American Express Shoprite card, I thought it would be just like any other credit card- and i was right. Its great. Alot of places accept it- not only in the U.S., but in Canada too. The only thing I recomend is to wright on the back of it-show photo identification when in use-this prevents people from stealing it and getting away with buying products. |
