"Due Diligence"
Okay, I'll admit I was a bit miffed when I saw the Debt Cancellation charge on my first bill, as the person who signed me up for the card at the store told me nothing about it. But, my experience canceling the service was quick and easy. I called, selected the menu option for canceling that service, gave my account number, and had a nice, brief chat with the girl on the other end regarding the service, the weather in India, recommended sights over there...and of course she had to read from her script on the benefits of keeping the service, I mean I get it; that's her job. But I politely declined and she took care of canceling it right away, and since I'm within the initial trial period the first charge will be refunded. Whole thing took maybe five minutes.

"Debt Cancellation"
After doing the math, I found out the debt cancellation fee is nothing more than a 10% APR applied to the balance.
Meanwhile, the balance ALSO accrues the card's listed APR.....initially 21%, now 25%.
As long as you pay off before the expiration date, you don't have to pay the deferred interest.
Seemed fair until I tried to pay off a big chunk of the balance with 8 days left on the "deferred interest" perk.
THEY CONVENIENTLY DIDN'T APPLY MY PAYMENT UNTIL AFTER THE PROMOTION EXPIRED.........JERKS!
Funny how all my other payments posted within 2 days.
NOW I HAVE $245 EXTRA TO PAY OFF!
Also, one time, I paid my bill over the phone because I was having problems logging into my account.
They charged me $35 for this, and they didn't warn me beforehand.......ridiculous!
I will never use a credit card again.
DISCOVER arbitrarily raised my APR from 13% to 23%.
Never missed a payment in my entire life on ANYTHING.
I become more disgusted with business and the financial industry as I get older.
They are so greedy and deceptive.
I read the Best Buy credit card agreement before signing and I never remember reading any HONEST description about what debt cancellation was.
Credit card companies get away with this stuff because they can.

"Debt Cancellation Fee"
HSBC has hit me with $19.97 each & every month for more than 2 years now; I didn't understand this fee until just recently & am quite mad about it. I called 1-800-365-6256, the number listed on the bill on the same line as "Debt Cancellation" & immediately asked the person on the other end to put me through to a supervisor. The same person came back on the phone twice to ask me if there was something he could do for me, & I again told him to put me through to a supervisor. A similar-sounding person (very broken English of an obvious East Indian decent) came on the phone & refused to speak with me when I informed him this was a conference call with the DA's Office & 2 local TV stations....he hung up on me. I will call again & will post the result later. Once this is done, never will I deal with any store backed by HSBC again.

Most attractive feature: Buy a last-minute item in a pinch, as with any other store card.
Least attractive feature: HSBC customer service rude & completely non-accommodating to it's card holders.

"Worst Buy"
Got nailed by the Debt Cancellation Fee as well. Also, when I called in to pay off my balance and close my account I was charged $15. Will never do business with Best Buy, HSBS, or Household Bank again.

"DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM BEST BUY!!!"
So after months of paying on my best buy card, I started coming to the conclusion that we as a whole get screwed over by these people!!! I started looking at my statements closer and realized I was getting charged for debt cancellation. I didn't realize this, and DO NOT remember anything about it, and it upsets me. So I call best buy and I put them on speaker phone so I can hear them better and they are having a birthday party in the office!!! So not only could I not understand the person who could not speak English very well, I had to hear his co-workers having fun in the background! I asked him to shut them up and it got a little quieter. But all in all, I have to call the debt cancellation people. Best buy does not deal with anything that I am coming to find out! They always tell you to ask someone else!!! So DO NOT buy anything from them, the customer service sucks, and they charge you for crap you did not know anything about!!!

Most attractive feature: Nothing....
Least attractive feature: Rip off because they sign you up for something you end up getting screwed on!!!

"Debt Cancellation charges on accout"
I hadn't had time to call on the debt cancellation charges on my account until last week. I had noticed them for a while. They told me that i had signed something and i asked how small the print was. she asked me to hold and came back on and said that they would cancel the policy as well as refund all previous debt cancellation charges. i received a letter in the mail today from HSBC stating that they were canceling as per my request. It did not however state that they would credit back my account for the previous charges. Hope they keep their word. I did ask and received the 1st name of the rep. this letter i received has no one's name listed - just signed customer service. 800-365-0292. i think that i had the benefit of calling after many others had done so. i asked them to fax me what i had signed and she said, "ma'am there is no need for us to do anything further as we are canceling the policy and crediting you back any previous charges. so i let it go

"debt cancellation"
We were told by HSBC that Debt Cancellation Fees are actually "credit insurance". NOT! It is a rip off. Buyer beware! My husband and I went into debt consolidation to get our credit back on track and it is working very well, however, HSBC/BestBuy has been charging this fee for over four years, and have pocketed $495.56 extra dollars. This was not something we knowingly signed up for and since we are in debt consolidation, we can't just pay these guys off on our own. I have done my homework and can honestly say that Debt Cancellation Fees are NOT a type of insurance. The CC company POCKETS the extra ten bucks every month and we haven't been able to pay the bill down much because they charge the fee every month. Our debt consolidator knows what has been going on and is trying to help us. HSBC has been paid almost $500 extra with this fee. I looked at the contract we signed and info. about the fee is in super small print and is explained as an insurance, and when you sign on the bottom line, you have unwittingly signed the okay for them to fleece you for this fee. It is only assessed if you default on the card, However, we did not default, we asked for a non-profit organization to step in on our behalf and get our interest lowered, we NEVER missed a payment, but because of the consolidation, HSBC considered the account delinquent and assessed the fee. Also, when you call the HSBC customer service number, you are directed to put in the last 4 digits of your SSN. From there, they have your information and can send you anywhere they want, and I have been sent to a bogus line to wait, not just once, but 40 times! Customer service is not customer service with HSBC retail card services, it is a dead end and you get hung up on after a five minute wait. I hope congress will put an end to this particularly offensive fee as well as other similar fees. I realize we dropped the ball with our credit status, but we stopped and evaluated our credit and we have worked hard to take care of this. Now I find we have been penalized for trying to take care of business in a fair and practical manner from the get-go. We are being robbed, not only of our $10.32 every month, but of our financial dignity, and if I was taking $10 from someone every month for a bogus reason, I would be arrested and formally charged. HSBC and other card company's who use this unethical but law accepted practice are basically stealing money every month from their patrons who are already having financial trouble. Note: I only mention the consolidation because it is related to the current problems with the credit card and why they charged the fee to begin with.
