Unholy Alliance with MBNA

Just think a bit droogies. Working Assets handed over the names, adresses, and finacial information of hundreds of thousands of liberals and progressives to an organization whose leadership does not just disagree with us, but hates us.

If you think that's OK, then by all means sign up. But might I suggest that you are better off just supporting activist groups directly, and cutting MBNA out of the deal.

life is about comprimises

I've heard a lot of people complaining about the working assests card's new affiliation. I agree with the company's statment that the good they do outweighs the evil of mbna. In a perfect world working assests would be it's own financial institution and be able to bankroll the utopia of human rights around the world. But the reality is we have few options for credit and citigroup is no better. It is much more beneficial to have my interest and finance charges paying for socially important programs to offset the work of giant banks rather than just handing the giant banks my money. We have to start somewhere.

Do the ends justify the means?

If you believe in Working Assets mission, how can you sign up for a credit card that benefits MBNA? I consistently send all MBNA propaganda I get from Working Assets back with request to stop sending. It makes me want to switch long distance.

They do indeed, compromise

Yesh, indeed, Working Assets even admits they compromised in choosing MBNA. In their own words:

"Thank you for your comments about the Working Assets Credit Card. We appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns regarding our new relationship with MBNA America.

Since Working Assets is not a financial institution, we require the assistance of a bank to issue our credit card. Due to the size of our customer base, only large banks are able to handle our credit card program. Thus when our prior issuer, Fleet Bank, put our credit card portfolio up for sale, and MBNA emerged as the only bidder, we accepted an arrangement with MBNA as a way to maintain our ability to offer the credit card product.

All of us at Working Assets are doing our best to make social change happen while remaining a viable business. We believe that the tens of millions of dollars channeled to progressive non-profits through our credit card and long distance programs more than offset the inevitable compromises required to operate our business."


And that's ALL they say. No indication whatsoever of why they made this disgusting decision that "compromised" them AND their customers, and no regrets expressed at their decision to do it. Time to dump them and move on to somebody REALLY socially responsible.

I support working for change and supporting good causes, but the fact that working asset has chosen to partner up with MBNA which is the largest contributor to the Republican Campaign in the banking industry does not seem a good fit for our values. Even tho Working Asset generates millions of dollars for the good, MBNA makes many more millions to pour into lobbiest and the Republician campaign that continue to errode our democracy for the people, by the people.

Offered through New Bank

I believe the Working Assets Card is now being issured through MBNA. I received a postal ad from them today. The flat interest rate appears very attractive, and it still offers the humanitarian donation benefit. I'm considering applying for this new card. Check it out.

False advertising?

Is it false advertising to say that you can download to finacial programs if it the file formats supported work only with 5 year old software?

From the Fleet site you can download .qif files only, which cannot be read by my program, which is Quicken 2000.
